Transmission Issue

I bought a 2007 A3 30 days ago. It drove great until about a week ago. I was at a stop sign coming off of the interstate when without any warning the PRNDS lights began to flash. I accelerated a little to turn and the RPM’s climbed to 5k then bucked. Eased over to gas station and put it into park. The gear shift would move from P to N, D and S but the gears would not take. The vehicle stays in Park even when you shift into N. Took it to a privately owned repair shop who says it needs a new transmission. I’m debating on whether to tow it to dealership 45 miles away for second opinion. I purchased the vehicle for 2500 but really don’t want to spend another 2500 for a used tranny or 6k for a new tranny. I also hate to sink another 200 into a tow bill and 160 for the dealer to tell me I need a new tranny. Any thoughts on if it could be something other than a tranny? It’s odd there were no warning signs.
