rns-e retrofit

Hello!

First of all I know this has been discussed already on other a3 forums but I still have questions!

I ordered a 2011 a3 premium Quattro with the base audi concert single cd. I wanted the audi nav but special order only and very expensive. I know I could install an aftermarket in-dash nav but I would rather have the OEM look of the RNS-E.

I found a used RNS-E on ebay for a reasonable price. But before I buy anything I have 2 questions:

1-Does the 2011 a3 have a double din setup? (I found an internet DIY guide but quite a bit of work when you have to convert a single din setup to double din. I know a3 2006-08 with base stereo had single din, not sure about 2011)

2-Will a used RNS-E from a 2006-07 a3 be a relatively easy plug and play installation ?

Thanks for your help!

Re: rns-e retrofit

Looking for the same unit for a 2011 A3 Quattro. Found vagnavs.com which seems to be a more trustworthy place to order, but definitely cost more as it will be coded correctly and probably comes with the latest firmware. I think if you go with the 2006 to 2008 unit, it may miss some of the functions, but I am not sure.

May I ask you which ebay site you find the unit? and can you provide a link to it?

Also, I emailed a guy who seems to sell a lot of the RNS E unit at a lower price. Recommended by some other Audi forums, by haven't heard anything back.

I have the same question about the double din vs single din as it looks like it will be a pain to convert it rather than plug and play with the double din setup. Probably can check with the sales guy to find out.

I bought the used RNS-E on ebay from rtvservice, in Poland. I paid $650 + $70 shipping.

Much to my surprise, the unit was delivered to my house in Canada 3 business days after I paid by paypal.

The RNS-E was in excellent condition, came with a gps antenna and Canada-US maps dvd. The seller asked specific info about my car (bluetooth, steering wheel controls, model year, factory cd player) and pre-coded everything!

I brought it to a local car stereo store, installation took less than 15 minutes and everyting works (steering wheel controls, cluster display, bluetooth, etc...)

Only problem was the maps dvd was an older copied version, so I bought a new (2009) dvd on ebay.

My car is a 2011 so it has double-din, I hear it is more complicated if you have to convert single to double-din.

I am very satisfied so far.

Do they have the 2nd generation RNS-E (2010+ high-res)? This is the one I'm looking for.

How much was the nav option?

The ebay one is a used unit and is pre 2010. if you are looking for the latest one, contact this guy -> haaggie@gmail.com. His name is Albert and is pretty responsive and can get you a new unit around $2100 including shipping and warranty.
