My current summer tires are Pirelli 245/40/R18 so do I need to get 18 inch winter wheels and rims? If u get a 17 inch package will that affect anything, ie performance? Apologies I don't know much about wheels etc so any advice is appreciated!

I live in cold Toronto, Canada so winters can be harsh sometimes

17 inch wheels work fine and you will save some money. Do some research on tire rack.com and see if a local shop might match the prices.

Also check the rolling diameter and make sure when you go to 17's that the actual tire size has the same circumference

I was unsure about how alloy rims would hold up in the salt, but took the plunge on a set of RIAL rims, from Germany, with a winter rating on them. I have run them 5 winters now and they have held up perfectly. I give them a coat of wax every year before summer storage. I went with one size smaller rims. You need to get a taller tire to compensate, and this reduces handling (all other things being equal), but you likely don't mind in the winter. You save a bit every time you need to replace the tires as the smaller ones will be less expensive.
