Default Painting Wheels ?? RS4 Silver to Dark Grey

Hello All,

I have the silver wheels and wanted to know if any of you out there have had any experience with getting them painted?

Has anyone refinished their silver RS4 rims to the dark gray ??
Or is this not a good idea ?

Thank you

I have done this and it has worked out pretty good so far. I took my rims and cleaned them up really nicely then started sanding. I started with 220 grit and then went to 400 wet/dry, 600 wet/dry and then 800 wet/dry, the better the base the better the finish coat will look. I spent a lot of time sanding and I did have a bit of curb damage on one rim that took a bit of extra work to fix.

Once I had the rims smooth with no chips I put a coat of primer on the rims and looked at options for paint. I didn't feel like mixing a bunch of paint so I went with spray bombs for the base colour, I used DupliColor rim paint and it looks really good. After each coat I wet sanded the rims with 800 wet/dry and then put another coat on each rim. Each rim has 4 coats of base coat and then I used some PPG automotive clear coat to seal them up. I put on 4 coats of clear with wet sanding between each one and the results were great.

After about a year the rims still look perfect, there are some little nicks here & there but nothing down to the old colour or the actual aluminum of the rim. 4 cans of paint, one per rim at about $8 a can and then the PPG clear coat at about $90 for clear & hardener made the rims look like new. You can get cheaper clear but this is tough stuff and I do use it for other things so it wasn't a waste.
