1997 A4 Check Engine Light
Hi there,
New to the board and new to my Audi
I have a 97 2.8 A4 Quattro; just recently the CEL came on during a trip, I have also been having some idle issues (when hot, engine would sometimes die coming to or at a stop, with a lower than usual idle speed).
I understand that I need a vag-com tool to check what the code is.
What exactly do I need? and where's the best place for me to get it?
Am I correct that it will reset service lights as well? (it's flashing oil at the tripmeter, but I know i'm not due for one for another 2000kms)
Thanks!

Hi there,
Vag Com is made by a company called Ross Tech
www.Ross-Tech.com
267-638-2300
I have one but Surry is about a 12 hour drive from Edmonton.
So you can borrow one or buy one. I think you are looking at about $350.00 from memory.
It consists of a cable that plugs into your diagnostic port on your Audi.
Usually drivers side dash under steering wheel to the left of it.
It also has software that needs to be installed on a notebook computer.
The Cel can be cleared and the service interval codes can be cleared.
Now I would note down the code before you clear it.
Most of the time it is a sensor by your catalytic converter that is not happy.
They get old, covered in gunk and pop codes.
If its this you can clear it no problem if its something else you may have to take it in to a good audi mechanic.
Note I did not say dealer. I avoid them like the plague.
Your idle/stall problem may be illuminated by Vagcom and give you a start point.
Hopefully this helps.
Good Luck.
Randy.

Thanks for the answer Randy!
I was able to get it scanned by someone locally with a vagcom.
this is what I got from it: 17517 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor; B2 S2: Voltage too Low / Air Leak
So I went and replaced the driverside rear sensor yesterday; the battary was dead from sitting so I didn't test it.
I'll find out if it fixed the problem today!
