Loud whining/whirling noise when starting the car?

Hi all,

Picked up a 2007 A4 2.0T a couple of months ago. Has about 60K kms.

My 2007 Audi A4 2.0T is making a loud whirling/whistling noise when I start the engine. (Even when it's warm outside...so not necessarily in cold weather)
Didn't notice this before. It lasts for about 30 seconds, then comes down.

I'm fairly new to the turbo world, but I know with Turbo engines, you'll always hear a slight whistle from the engine as the turbo spools, but this sounds a little louder than normal. The whistle should be a little more discreet. Also feels like I lost some power. (but that could be my mind playing tricks on me)
When I accelerate, you hear that same whirling noise; even if I am not pushing the car at all. I don't think the turbo whine should be that loud, and i don't think I should hear it if I'm only going 30km/hr.

No chip in the car...it's stock.

Also noticed the engine ticks as it warms up. Not sure if it's all the same problem.

Any idea?

The whirling noise at start-up is probably the secondary air injection pump. It runs about 30 seconds to help reduce emmsions, then shuts down. If yuo're just starting to hear it, it could be on its way out. You'll eventually get a CEL with a P0411 code.

At least, that was how it all shook out on my 1.8.

Perhaps is the Air intake. i have aftermarket and High Flow Cat so mine is load sounds like that because that intake is sucking like a pig and the loud grumbles from the high flow cat.

Should the air injection pump or air intake whirling noise continue while I'm driving? Say at only 1200rpms? Do your cars make a loud whirl/whistle noise even if your not pushing it?

and....would it reduce power?

no worries! we are all here to help and learn!
for mine because i have a different air intake over the stock one i can really hear it over the stock one. i can hear the turbo spool and blow off at all speeds. maybe you have a stock AI unit and someone has modded it to be able to hear it like mine. i know some people cut into the bottom of it for that reason and reduces the dampening of the sound and maybe that's what you are hearing.
if you just go it perhaps take it back to the stealship and have look at it. where in canada are you anyways? if you are near by then pop out to one of our golden horseshoe meets and maybe we can give it a listen and see.

we normally do the meets on Tuesdays... but we have a but of a get together this sat. check out the oil change thread under golden horseshoe section under eastern Canada. if not able to make it out we will have other meets posted there as to the location. normally theme based as it we will do a photo shot night, meet and do wings night, cruises, ect...

ps. if its just the turbo spooling up sound then no performance is lost. if its not that then perhaps its something else and maybe it is. hard to say without actually seeing or hearing it.

we normally try and meet every 2-3 weeks... good group of nice people and accepting of all audis modded or not. great way to learn a ton of things as well see what some of the mods look like before doing them on your own car!

UPDATE:
Hey guys,
brought the car to the dealership.
Looks like it was air injection, which they will replace. They are also putting in a new Turbocharger. (all under warranty - so nothing out of my own pocket)

They said they would put an Audi Turbocharger....no aftermarket or anything.

At first I was ecstatic about it! New Turbo - awesome...

but now, I'm a little concerned. Why did the original turbo die after only 60K?
Could the previous owner have really pushed the car and just blown it? Or is it something else?

Should I be concerned? Or am I being paranoid, and should consider this a good thing to get a new Turbo under warranty!!

Thoughts?
