Default A6 quattro need winter tires?

My 2010 A6 quattro came with Continental ContiProContact 245/40 18" all season tires.

Couple questions:

1) Do I need to bother with winter tires for driving in Edmonton (winter 9 months of the year)? Or with the all seasons with AWD suffice?

2) If so, suggestions.. ? I was thinking 235/45 17" but there are a lot out there

This is subjective - no one can answer this question for you. Winter tires are vastly superior to All-Seasons, and I recommend them to everyone that lives in a snowy region. On snow, A FWD car with good Winters will outperform an AWD with shitty All-Seasons.

For what it's worth, I use studded Winters and will never drive a car with All-Seasons again. If you do buy Winters, get the skinniest tires that are safe for your wheels. If your car came with 245s, you can probably go down to 215s safely, but check your wheel width to be sure (if you don't have documentation handy, it's stamped on the barrel of every wheel).

My A6 came with 18" Michellin all seasons performance tires. I installed 17" Michellin Pilot PA3. The car is glued to the road in winter (Calgary) and has excellent traction. Be careful though when braking as no tires will save you on pure ice.

with all your snow and quattro i would just put chains on out that way! lol. sorry joking around. i would look at some decent winter rubber. i used my all season for the first 2 winters here with no probs... had to rock it out once but snow was stupid high. this year i will have winters as i have some nice custom 19's for summer.

x2 for what Cheeba said ... winters are far superior to all seasons. Snows will provide better traction with shorter stopping distances. When the difference between an accident and close call is inches, best to have the benefit of winter tires ... I'm going from 255/55/19 summers to 215/50/ 17 winters.

Just to let you guys know, it is not so much snow out west that becomes an issue, it is the ice that lies beneath. Having like in Quebec, Ontario and Alberta, I would say snow depth was highest in that order.

Winter tires are a thing of beauty if selected for the conditions most likely encountered. I chose Firestone Winterforce last year, they handled like dry pavement 95% of the time. Get winters you will never look back, besides it's nice to have a set mounted on spare wheels, keep your summers shiny and happy

Just my 2 bits; all seasons are only all seasons somewhere near North Carolina.
My car is qick but blindngly, but when there is 4-6" of snow, lookout nothing can keep up. Actually looking forward to this winter. Best snows I have ever had Nokian Hakkelpelittas BAR NON!

Continental tires are the worst tires ever produced for winter. You can not get any worse than Continental.
These tires are designed for German Highways and since Adolf Hitler wanted everything to last 1000 years he built them using concrete. Continentals are tires designed to be driven on concrete surface. There is no snow in Germany and if some of it would be on the Autobahn they would kick the butt of the local Gauleiter responsible for it. They can not afford it.

During winter Continentals become hard as rocks and at the same time they release some slime and become even more slippery. I had them on my Jetta some time ago and I thought that VW is a problem during winter, but it was that damned continentals.
On Audi it does not really matter what you have since it is a 4X4.
I live in Calgary so we are neighbours weatherwise. I recommend for you Michelin Pilot or Micheline whatever All Season will do perfect. Do not go winter tires because there is no reason for it and you will start hating your car because of the noise, fuel consumption, and bad handling. Sometimes you will not be able to turn your steering wheel due to snow accumulation above the wheels.

In case you want to save cappa dollars you may want to go to Ukrainian Tire and check the tires called PREDATOR. People do not buy them a lot so they are rather cheap at approx. $80.00 per piece.
In fact they are very good tires made by Michellin ( check inside) rated to 190 km/hr.

I use Pirrelli winters and have no complaints about noise handling or otherwise.
