Default When shifting into reverse it goes into first?? S4 B5

So i was coming home from work and i noticed that 6th gear was getting really hard to get into gear and wasnt coming out very easily. The last time i tried shifting it out of 6th it got stuck and had to use some power to get it out (probably did more damage then good). So i parked it and left it for a while. Came back later in the day and tried backing out and it was making me go forward instead. I tried it again and same.

Would it be the linkage cross rod? Or am i looking at a complete tranny rebuild (dont think so, do try to baby the beast)?

How many KMS?

The O1E trans has know problems like the 1-2 shift collar and syncros but your problem sounds like a linkage.

Pull the shifter boot and have a look at the shifter ball and cup. They are prone to wear. If you have excessive slop replace it with JHE unit.

Also check the allen bolt under there on the shoft rod and make sure its not loose. If it is a drop of loctite and a re tourque should do it.

JHE makes great stuff.

Cross your fingers its not the trans itself.

also check if you have had a short shifter installed by the previous owner. They're often poorly installed and need to be properly aligned.

I just pulled it and it is defiantly a stock shifter. The car has 200000km on it. I bought a linkage cross rod from JHMotorsports, they modified the plastic piece and made it metal. Im hoping thats it.

Anyone have a cross linkage break?? If so how did you know?

So i lied about it going into first when it goes into reverse, it actually ONLY goes into 5th and 6th no matter where i shift. When it is in gear its very sloppy from left to right... Cross linkage still??

the JHM shifter trio is light years better than stock

as I said above, most people install them poorly causing problems. I have no idea what else it could be.

Call JHM. They're tough to reach, but call them, leave them a message that you bought a car with their shifter parts and need some help

or email V8@jhmotorsports.com

cheers

Oops... I ment JHM not JHE...

Any luck with your trans?

Just a thought... Has a trans mount failed? This could potentially lean the trans to one side making shifting impossible. Ive never heard of this happening but seeing as the stock S4 engine and trans mounst suck it could be possible...

I just fixed the problem. It was an "easy" fix. The cross linkage bolt came loose and just needed to be tightened. The bolt was almost impossible to tighten because of the restriction in space.

Thanks for the help guys.
