Convince me to buy in Canada.

As I get older I become somewhat more cynical about certain things in life. Nothing is more annoying than buying a new car. Why cant buying a car be like going to the grocery store. You go in see the product you want go to the cashier pay for it and go out. But no when buying a car we have to do the car sales dance. This also applies to other big ticket item purchases as well. Do we haggle in the grocery store over the price of milk, a box of corn flakes etc etc. Sure some of these items go on sale and being a true Canadian we are always looking for the best deal but if its not on sale we pay the marked price. How many of us would walk into a car dealership and say I want that vehicle and here is my money? No weve been taught that the sticker price is only a suggested price and that we can get it cheaper. Do you realize that 80% of Canadians live within a 2 hour drive of the US border. Over the last 20 years cross border shopping has become a hot topic especially with vehicles. we have all heard stories of I bought this vehicle in the US and saved X amount. Its got so bad that certain manufacturers will not sell a BRAND NEW vehicle to a Canadian resident and this includes AUDI. Im more amazed at the numbers of used vehicles now being imported into Canada by individuals and yes Canadian dealers. Sure I know its not the fault of individual dealers as they are given set prices to sell at. Yes I know the US economy is bigger than ours etc etc. There will be the cries of support the Canadian economy etc etc but how true is that? If a buy an AUDI in Canada or the US where does the bulk of that money go ? To AUDI of course and where are AUDI located of course GERMANY. If I can save X amount buy buying in the US where do you think I will spend my savings mainly in Canada. So come on Audi convince me to buy in Canada.

If you've got the time to go down south I would do it if there is significant money to be saved and you can live with the potential warranty hassles. I know the Porsche dealer told me that if I brought a US car in for warranty I would go to the back of the line up for service. I don't know how Audi deals with US cars. The car industry in general needs to sort the pricing out so that the discrepancy isn't so big between Canada and US. I haven't even checked out the situation with Audi. Is it significant?

Well i wanted to buy my Audi A5 in the USA problem was i wanted a brand new one and non of them wanted to sell it to me as they had used ones and those were the ones they were ready to sell it to me .

If its a new one well maybe you will have better luck then me but if its a used one go for it if the prices are lower then here which i have no doubt they are .

I do realize that Audi USA wont sell a brand new Audi to a Canadian.
Based on my calculations using a $1.05 exchange rate and using both the Audi USA and Audi Canada build your own vehicle configerators and choosing the same options i.e US Prestige package with metallic paint job and the Canadian Premium Plus package with the B & O sound system (standard on US Prestige) you would be saving approx $2000 on a brand new vehicle taking into consideration the 6.1% duty, $100 Excise Tax, RIV fee and GST and PST.
US Base price $$44,090 converted to Cad = $46,294.50 + $2823 Duty, $100 Excise = $49,217 value for taxes. GST $2460, PST $3445 + $1850 RIV gives a grand total of approx $55,307

Cost of Cad vehicle is $51245 incl freight and the B & O sound system. GST $2562 PST $3587 for a total of $57,394.

The biggest savings appear to be on used vehicles and Im sure many members of this site will attest to this.

Is anyone familiar with a northern US Audi dealer that is Canadian friendly?

This crossed my mine when I was shopping for my car. I didn't find that the savings were that great for it to be worth my time. I don't think getting a dealer to sell to me will be an issue, since I have an address that I can use and also a company that can "hold" it for me if necessary. Just didn't want the hassle. It may be $2k cheaper, but cost of my flight down, hotel, the drive back up just wasn't worth the trouble for me. Also, I don't understand MPH, so it will drive me nuts. I want my car to be in KPH.

Used car, yes it will be much cheaper because the cars themselves are cheaper and more supply. When I go shopping for a summer car, I might consider it.

I bought in America, for one reason: SELECTION

when I was looking for a B7 S4, I searched canada high and low, but could never find the right car...or if I did it was in BC and 3000 miles away

then I started looking in New York after a friend imported a car. That and eventually I realised...searching for a rare car in Canada is insane (or will drive you insane)

I saved a few bucks too as pricing was disparate back then, but now I'd have to say the selection in the USA is worth the process.
