Default trying to evaulate the value of a used Audi

Hi there,

I am new to the Audi world, and for that matter have not purchased a car in quite some time.

I have narrowed my search down to two vehicles, the Audi A4 Avant either 2.0T or 3.2 preferably manual, or the Volvo V50 AWD. I am looking for a 2006 or 2007 with 50K or less.

I have found a few cars matching my criteria however, I am noticing that the Audi's are considerably higher priced. Both of these vehicles start out new very closely priced. However, the Audi's seem to be garnishing a higher used price.

With that said I am not really willing to spend more money then I need to. I have looked at:

www dot vmrcanada dot com
and
nada dot com

To try and establish a fair used value for a used A4 Avant and from what I can find every dealer in western Canada seems to be about 30 - 40% over what these books say. Whereas the dealers selling the used Volvo's are within %10.

If anyone is willing to share their philosophies with me I would be greatly appreciative. Basically how the hell does one set the "fair market price" for a used Audi. I know it all boils down to supply and demand but in the end you need to buy at market prices so that you don't get screwed when / if you have to sell. It is this market price that I am having a hard time coming up with.

cheers,
-reagan

The used Audi market does seem to be quite strong. This time of year there's lots of demand for an AWD car. If your thinking European and AWD, Audi is the first brand that comes to mind. I frankly think the Audi is a much better car than the Volvo. A significant amount of Volvo is owned by Ford for better or worse. That said there are some deals on Audi to be had but finding the right car does take time.

I've owned a Volvo AWD vehicle and it was absolutely horrible. Aside from a really lousy AWD system, the thing was constantly in the shop. The longest I drove the thing without taking it to the dealer (during the warranty period) was three months. I've driven Volvo's for quite a while and I can say with great confidence that the quality has taken a nose dive since Ford took ownership of the company. Buy an Audi. End of Story. If you must, try a BMW with X-drive.

I aggree with PS7 about Volvo..STAY AWAY not made like they used to be. If you are a member of CAA go on the website and they have a section for used vehicles price list. Just fill in the imformation on the car you want to purchase and they will e-mail you the list price of that car. It gives you an idea what the price will be with options, mileage, etc. Makes shopping easier, money wise of course. I have used this service a few times for shopping and for selling my vehicles. Good luck
