Angry Catalytic Converter Probably Gone- 04' A4 1.8T

Hello -

I'm new to this forum....I have an 04' A4 1.8T and on way home tonight, the 'System Malfuntion' light came on, the car wouldn't accelerate, shifting gears didn't help either and I had to pull off of the road...

The area under where driver's side of car made a weird noise after this warning light came on AND the car suddenly had a bad smell coming from that area. I only drove about 30 ft. and then pulled off road and I'm having it towed to repair station. The car manual said, if the 'System Malfunction' light starts flashing, the catalytic converter may be damaged and then I realized where the noise and smell was coming from, that exact area!

Does anyone know if the Catalytic Converter is covered under the Audi Manufacturer's warranty??? I have an extended warranty on the car, BUT they do not cover 'Exhaust and Emissions Systems Components' - GO figure!

Anyone else have this happen to their A4???

Thanks!
Marsha

IIRC the cats are covered to 80000miles. The fuel pump is located at the passenger rear. If It's more of a hummung sound, I would recommend to change the fuel filter ASAP. Before the fuel pump dies. Do you have easy acces to vag-com? The CEL could be numerous things. Most likely a few misfires and failing coilpack.

Good luck and keep us posted!

did u buy it when it was 0 km or is ur car covered with extended warranty?

New car warranty should be covered with no charge.

Extended warranty: 100 dollars deductible (meaning before they bring it into the shop, they rip u off), thats before they diagnose the problem, wait a couple of hours.. and find the problem and fixes it... and charge u for a couple of hours for labour on top of ur 100 and not charge u for the cat.. (if its the cat). And it only covers the engine area.. anything else like fuel pump... fuel filter.. rear wheel bearing... exhaust... they wont cover from their contract.

what is the least expensive way to have a Cat Converter replaced?

I.e by part on EBAY or do we need an OEM one
or should I go to a scrap yard and get a used one?

Thanks

im in need of a converter as well but dont want to go through Audi. Audi pfaff was talking a little under $2000 to replace the cat and 02 sensors.

I think the best bet would be a universal cat? Would that pass emissions in ontario and not throw a cel.

what does a universal cat cost?
also is it always necessary to replace the 02 sensors when changing the cat?

Hi Rob, I got a quote from a local muffler shop. They can do a cat for 500 parts and labour.
I think I can get it cheaper so I am still shopping a bit.

Let me know how you make out

Thanks

Testpipe would be the least cost route (not acceptable for tree huggers). A nice alternative would be going with a high flow cat - I had an MTM DP/ relocated HFC that woke up the Miltek exhaust on my B6 BT A4 ...
