I've never used Sport mode on my RS6 - it didn't cause me any
difficulties when tailing a Merc at 150+MPH on the German autobahn on
Sunday.

I am having the same problem with my 2008 2.0T A3. Did you ever figure out whether that was the "normal" configuration, or whether it is a problem? I find that the RPMs go to the red zone before the tramsmission upshifts. In effect, the Smode becomes much slower than the Dmode.
