Re: Whining/howling noise when I lift off the gas pedal
Tomashek -The noise I hear may be different from yours. Mine sounds like the sound when you put a car in reverse, -but the sound is alot more diminished. I heard it this morning as I drove off, and the sound I hear doesn't only happen for a sec. as I lift off the gas pedal, -it happens for a longer period during take off. I'm thinking it's the gears as it's still new.
Could we be talking about the same issue?

I hope, cause if it ain't it, then I have another problem to deal with......

Tomashek,- I heard the howling noise this morning!
I remember hearing it before but never thought anything of it. I always thought it was some electronic system starting up. -I know what you are referring to now.. Please let us know what Audi tells you when you go in for your next appointment next week. To me it only lasts for a sec or two on take off..

Re: Whining/howling noise when I lift off the gas pedal
Q5 got TSB done for jerky tranny, and they were optimistic that it'll take care of the howling.
Not so much.....As a matter of fact - I hear/feel virtually no difference after TSB. Transmission still jerks when comes to stop and howling/grinding noise still there. I tried to find out which TSB they performed, but was told that is information between Audi and dealer and it not disclosed.
I’ll go again today to see what my options are now...
Keep you posted.

Please keep us posted.. I have to take it in tomorrow for a water leak and I'm going to mention the howling issue. -We'll see what they say..

Re: Whining/howling noise when I lift off the gas pedal
I went to Audi yesterday and for the water leak they said it's normal. The water sometimes gets into the window molding and nothing we can do about it. The mechanic applied some silicon and that was the end of that issue.
As for the whining / howling noise, -we went for a drive and just as I had anticipated nothing... The mechanic said that a noise of this nature usually would come from the climate control system starting up. (Fan or component of the CCS) He said if it was something mechanically like the transmission, it would occur more frequent and would be more obvious.
For me I only hear this sound when I leave my house in the morning. Once the engine is warm, -nothing.. so it would make sense that it would be a system start-up related sound.
I remember awhile back on an Acura I owned, I did notice a sound and mechanic came to the same conclusion. Over time it disappeared.
I'm not 100% convinced but it does make some sense. -Please keep us posted on any new developments..

Re: Whining/howling noise when I lift off the gas pedal
Talked to dealer again, tech will call Audi hotline and see what they say.
Funny thing is, that after TSB, transmission is even jerkier than it was before, go figure.....
I just hope that this problem will somehow rectify itself over the time as many reported.
But my main concern is grinding/howling noise, that came about 2500k. I got a feeling that I'm in for very bumpy road.....
Let you know soon....

Re: Whining/howling noise when I lift off the gas pedal
OK, so my run is over with it....
2 guys came to test drive my Q5. Car was warmed up from driving, so it wasn’t doing howling sound as much, but enough to hear it. One guy didn't hear it at all, other heard it couple times, but very little.
They came with 2.0T, so after testing mine, they asked me to drive theirs and compare. It had over 7K. I jumped in and............... same kind of noise was there..... I was stunned! Cursed it! Theirs car was warmed up too, so it didn't do as much as in the morning when you start driving fresh. Anyway, case is blamed on "characteristic of the car"
I'm quite disappointed, again, car is the blast to drive, just other "small" things taking it down a bit.
One question remains: if that is characteristic of the car, then how come almost no one else hears it? That remains a mystery to me....
My case is done. I have to learn how to live with that, and that won't be easy. But no choice is left. I thought I will keep my Audi for 6-8 years, but that just simply won't happen. What a shame....
Peace.

Tomashek, - I hear it too and am also somewhat disappointed. But I think that if it's something serious, it will get alot worse to the point that Audi will have to ackowledge it and fix it. Thats what i'm waiting for.
If it's a 'characteristic' of the car then so be it, but I have a feeling it's not normal and eventually we will get to the bottom of it and find the issue.

Re: Whining/howling noise when I lift off the gas pedal
They told me to keep reporting it every time I service my car, or let them know if it gets progressively worse. I was also sent survey, I did let them know what the problem is. I don't put my hopes up with someone to follow up with me, unless they will surprise me.....
For now, it is what it is.
Still love the car though, handling, style, inside design. It's second to none, IMO.
