Re: Whining/howling noise when I lift off the gas pedal
Almost 10k right now. I could still hear it this morning as I was driving to work, but I find it has diminished over time. I'm thinking it's because our cars are new and are breaking in.
Perhaps all Q5's have this sound but drivers don't notice it. With the radio on and exterior traffic noise, it's hard to hear it. The good news is that it did diminish for me. I may take it in when I get a chance.

I plan to drive it to fist oil change and bring it to tech attention.
rocco_ca, with 10k approaching, you must have done oil change on it, right? Did you mention that issue with service?

No I didn't because I thought it was normal. I'm going to wait awhile and see if anyone else hears the sound, and take it from there. For me it's very minimal right now that I'm thinking the dealer may just say it's nothing. However, I'm going to take it in when I get a chance.

Re: Whining/howling noise when I lift off the gas pedal
OK, that noise is really annoying to me. I have done some testing and it looks like it does it between 2-4 gear on 8 gear transmission.
accelerating - it's all OK, then take foot off - howling for sec.
Hard to say where it comes from. I plan to take it to the dealer next week to check it, can't wait till first oil change.
Couple posts describe howling/whining noise when foot on the gas pedal and sound goes away when off. Fix for them was to change differential.
But mine is exactly opposite.
We'll see what dealer says....

Re: Whining/howling noise when I lift off the gas pedal
Update
I went to see dealer and we test drove it and damn thing didn't do it as much! Of course, it would be to easy! Howling happened just couple times, not nearly enough for tech to really detect it. I told him that I'll monitor it and bring it to his attention again when it happens constantly.
Today is -20C and I can hear it every time, so it has to be related to outside temp as well. The day I got test drive was like -2C.
Anyway, I'll probably wait till first oil change and see it summer time makes difference. For now - I guess I'll have to live with it.
Peace.

Re: Whining/howling noise when I lift off the gas pedal
Update-------
Noise has gone worse. It's more like howling/grinding. Took q5 again today to dealer, test drove it with tech and no question, he could hear it too. No idea whatsoever what it might be, so he'll call Audi hotline for assistance. I have appointment scheduled next week, will update after.
It's a shame, 3400km now and this happens.....Worst part is - issue unknown, and I know what that means - usually very long fixing process.....

I am optimistic, I am sure they will get you back up and running soon. In return for your trouble they should give you the "hot line" phone number. I'd love to have that.

Re: Whining/howling noise when I lift off the gas pedal
The howling in my car doesn't seem to happen that often but when I mentioned it to the service guy, he immediately said that it was "normal" and was from the secondary air pump or something.. I'm not too happy about that response but it's bullshit that they claim is normal...

Re: Whining/howling noise when I lift off the gas pedal
If you have same thing happening, then it's for sure not normal. There should be no grinding/howling noise when you take your foot of the gas pedal - no matter what car brand you drive, kia or audi or infiniti.
On the other hand, cars do brake, so it's not unusual. With 4y warranty, I'm pretty optimistic.
It's just holding to my Audi for 7 years +, which was my initial idea, seems to be diminishing....
Extended warratny a must!

Tomashek -The noise I hear may be different from yours. Mine sounds like the sound when you put a car in reverse, -but the sound is alot more diminished. I heard it this morning as I drove off, and the sound I hear doesn't only happen for a sec. as I lift off the gas pedal, -it happens for a longer period during take off. I'm thinking it's the gears as it's still new.
Could we be talking about the same issue?
