Oil consumption - 2011 Q5

Oil consumption - 2011 Q5
I have 85,000 km on my 2011 Q5 and I have to top up oil every 2,000 km. Do other people have this problem? I was told that I have to pay $850 to get Audi to check if the oil consumption is abnormal. Every 2,000 km seem abnormal to me.

I also have a 2011 Q5 2.0T, now at about 88,000km. It was good with oil for the first 60,000km but is now consuming at the same rate as yours - about 1 liter every 2,000km. While this is a bit annoying, oil is rather inexpensive and I just carry a spare liter with me to top up when necessary. City driving seems to consume oil much more than highway driving.

Re: Oil consumption - 2011 Q5
I started a trend on oil consumption about 4 years ago on the Q5 2.0T check it out lots of useful info there......
What I can tell you now is that you should ask your dealer to perform an oil consumption test to confirm the problem exists and is there. After this test, they should tell you that they need to perform an engine overhaul, that's what they made me do and the problem went away. The engine overhaul takes about 2 weeks to do.

Sure I can get the oil consumption test, my dealer told me that it costs $850. Did you see the class action suit in the US that Audi settled in September concerning this? I am happy with the Q5 but going to the dealer every month for a top up is annoying.

rocco_ca: how much was this engine overhaul. I was told that if my Q5 does indeed have the problem, I will have to pay another $800 to get it fixed. They said that it`s a $7000 fix but Audi Canada pays 85%, my Audi dealer 5% and me 10%. Was that what you did?

Re: Oil consumption - 2011 Q5
I started having oil consumption early on when my vehicle was just delivered to me so I was lucky it was on warranty. Yes, this engine overhaul is a major one. It took them 2 weeks to perform. I went in occasionally to check in on my Q5 and what I saw was unbelievable! Completely disassembled the engine changed all pistons, rings and everything else. Bottom line, the Q5 2.0T is a beautiful vehicle, you have to make a decision and decide either you trade it in for another car or get it fixed. 1650,00$ to get everything fixed is not that bad considering all the work and parts they have to replace.
From my experience, what I can confirm is that I never had any oil consumption issue after they performed the engine overhaul, and At time of trade in I had 103,000km's
Another option is to take Audi to court or join a class action suit but that takes a lot of time, energy and money.. is it really worth it ?

Asked question about the same issue here:

Is Audi willing to cover costs for engine repairs at 2011 model with ~ 92K mileage?

Best thing to do is to go see your local Audi dealer and ask them. For me, oil consumption issue occurred when I purchased the vehicle so it was covered on warranty.

OK, I had quick conversation with Audi dealership this morning, they told me to bring the car for check but mentioned that fixing cost is not covered by Audi Canada.

Re: Oil consumption - 2011 Q5
I think that it is ridiculous that I have t pay $850 for a diagnostic on a car that obviously has the problem. I needed a top up after 1600 km, how is that not a problem. We should do something, it's not as if the Q5 is a cheap SUV.
