Early Oil Change

Early Oil Change
I've read a few threads about the 2011 Q5's and oil consumption but haven't found anything regarding this issue my in-laws are having.
Their 2014 Q5 needed to go into the dealer for an early service since one of the sensors was tripped. Apparently the oil was too rich and the recommended course of action was to do a full oil change.
We live in the cold climate of northern Ontario. They don't have a block heater, and only drives five minutes to and from work. At most during the course of the day the vehicle sees twenty minutes of road.
The dealer (as well as other sources) have told us that this particular driving pattern would suggest increasing the oil change interval to half of the suggested value or at the very least every 8k.
They upgraded from a GM product (Grand Am, Canyon) where they didn't have this issue.
I understand that they are likely not driving enough which is causing the issue. I would like to get more factual information regarding the specifics of the issue.
I appreciate your comments.
