Default MultiFunctional Temp Sensor Replacement

Have been fighting various starting and stalling problems with my 1990 Audi 100. Problem turned out to be a faulty Water Temp Sensor that would read open to the guage but sometimes would also short out due to condensation in the boot. There are 2 sensors on this audi - one 2 wire on top of the radiator pipe and another 3/4 wire connector below the pipe. The botttom one is famous for all sorts of problems. It is a 29mm hex fitting, but a 29 mm socket won't work as I can't get a long one on the fitting and a short one won't reach past the sensor terminals to the hex shaped nut. I can't find a 29mm open end/box wrench combo to buy or rent. Has anyone found a trick to removing this stubborn sensor? Thanks in advance. Doug.
