Default Audi A5 from US to Canada?

Hi , im looking to buy an Audi A5, but the price in Canada is just outrageous, i want to buy an Audi A5 in US, but on RIV, its not listed. So im just wondering if A5 is legal in Canada, and can the car be modified to fit canadian standards. This is my first time buying a car in US to Canada, so im bit nervous

I called on the S5 before it was on the list and it is admissible. There's no real reason the A5 should be inadmissible, but you need to call RIV and they will give you the status. Generally the cars are admissible until said inadmissible. Don't risk it though, just give them a call.

THanks tony, when they say admissible it means it can come through canada and pass the canada car test? like doing all the modification and etc. Im still new, so im just wondering wts the process or things i need in order to get an a5 from US to canada.

Yes, admissible means the car may be imported to Canada. It means that the car already meets Canadian standards or that all of the parts that are necessary to modify the car to Canadian standards are either already on the car or are available in Canada.

From what I have read, about the only thing you may need to do is have an Audi dealer reprogram the (DRL) daytime running lights. In the US the DRL's have a switch with the option to shut them off. Canada's safety standards suggest they need to turn on automatically and not be given the option to shut them off while the car is in motion.

I have also read that other forum members here who have imported later model Audi's have not had to have the DRL's reprogrammed simply because the switch was turned on and the DRL's were running when the car was inspected. That being said, make sure your's are on when the car goes in for inspection. The only thing that may draw attention to your DRL situation is the newer LED DRL's. Either way it pans out, it's an inexpensive programming change that will still save you thousands of dollars over buying one locally.

The only request we have here on the forum is that as soon as you get the car home, you wash it and post pics of the new ride! Good luck with your purchase.

Check with an Audi dealer on that. If you are buying from a dealer in the US, they should be able to provide more information on it.

Even though the A5/S5 features don't list the anti theft/immobilizer, every other model Audi does. I know the A5/S5 use a new key system which has a few more features, but it would be ridiculous to think that it didn't have an immobilizer built in.

Here's a few search results I found that list an immobilizer:

Not really. Promoting sales to Canada from the US is frowned upon by Audi of America. It may even be considered grey market. That being said, any Audi dealer will sell you a car, they just don't push it. I think if anything you will be limited to the dealer that has the exact car you want, if you aren't ordering and waiting. Personally I would be trying to find one that is Audi Certified if you aren't buying new. From there I would just pick a dealer that's close so you can go see and drive the car. You could always post a thread here asking for feedback of dealers who have sold to Canadians. Search around on the forum as well. There's a few guys who sounded a little nervous about the whole thing, yet it turned out to be a piece of cake with newer model cars. PM them and see what they think.

Again, good luck!

Limeoasis,

Try eimports4less.com. They state right on their website that they take care of the Canadian import. Just click on any car they have for sale and scroll down. They currently don't have an A5 listed but do have lots of late model Audis. Maybe they'd track down an A5 for you if you asked. If you look at their 'sold' list you can see lots of cars that were shipped to Canada. Their prices seem great too.

Good luck.

Interesting stuff.

Those guys are in Pennsylvania, however. What is the situation with the warranty if you buy in the US? Can you get it honoured here in Canada?

I was initially thinking of looking for a dealer in upper NY state, as I'm in Toronto.
