Default 90 100 with a ghost

Just added a 1990 100 to our family of VW's. Great car for a massive 400.00 price tag.

I figured for the price it would need a bit of work.

Well... I am wondering if anybody has experienced this. Driving along then the speedo starts bouncing between 10 to 50, at the same time all but the drivers power window will work. The sunroof only is operational when this epic ghost story takes place.

At present I am looking into the PW control relay that I think controls the sunroof also. Then the speed sensor, IGN switch, INST cluster and so on.

If anyone can give me a heads up on this, The Guiness is on me!!

Thanks

Well you have yourself a little gem of history there. Judging by your ghost problems you will have an ongoing project for some time. Best of luck. I would love to see some pics of the car when you get a chance. Is your car the 5 cyl 10 valve or 20 valve. My son has the 1990 quattro coupe and he may be able to assist you with some of your questions. PM "jonnymaljar"

BTW welcome to the forum.

I had a V8 that did something similar and it turned out to be the control relay for the factory alarm system.

When your ghost appears do you hear a clicking under the dash???

Audictd thanks for the reply.

This car of mine is more of a base model. Loaded mind you, but no alarm relay present. The V8 models had everything Audi could install at that time.

I am working on testing for a few cold solder points in the PW/sunroof module and maybe a bad connection at the INST cluster. I will keep posting as I move along.

Cheers

No luck so far. I cured a mild battery draw. Waiting for a electrical diagram and will go from there.

I looked thru the Bentley and found that none of these systems are connected, so, your problem is a ground is either loose or undone completely.

Its no fun chasing ground problems.....but I would start with the drivers door.
The wires going through the door to under the dash get flexed alot with opening and closing the door and after time the insulation can become brittle leaving bare wires exposed to each other causing "ghosts". BTDT

Good luck

Audictd THANKS again for your digging.

I will check into that this weekend. Haven't had a chance to look at it in the last few days. I am getting a full Wiring diagram on friday for the car. Should be a great read?? This Audi is just a VW with a bunch more wires, right? haha

Cheers

Well… Mr.Smarty Pants wins the day in warfare with an Audi 100.

I am doing a link and solder of all runs through the drivers door.

Trace J21 @ the speedo head was bad on the circuit board on the cluster.

Repaired bad alternator exciter blue wire to cluster.

Have to look into a poor aftermarket radio install. After that….

I think I get to drive an AUDI 100
with heated seats that cooks your **** this winter.

Let you all know on Sunday Eve.

Big CHEERS

Well... I am in Red Deer, AB.

I guess it depends on how far I have to travel.. But I am game for Guiness any time.
I will by you two if you can figure the speedo problem, I think I have that fixed though.

Have a good one!!

And thanks again for the insight.
