The "new guy"...
That's me...!
Been lurking abit lately, figured I'd join & contribute/ask questions...
I'm in the market for a "new-to-me" vehicle, & an Audi is looking like it's the ticket (a Tacoma TRD crew-cab 6spd is my other choice)...
I don't have my deposit/down-payment yet, well not as much as I want to put down.
I'm waiting for an ins. settlement (was a passenger in an MVA 2+yrs ago, offer's been submitted, should be finalized shortly).
I initially wanted just a nice/low-KM A4 2.0T. A (non-Audi) dealer had a great example, but also had an '05 S4...
I've done alot of browsing here, audi-forums dot com, audiforums dot com, audizine, audiworld, etc.
So I know the 2.0T can be brought up to or beyond the HP-level of an S4, but I also know ~ It's not the same...
I have a bit of a bad back, so the Recaros were very appealing. After sitting in them, the A4 seats felt like school-desks...
Then there's the purr/growl/& scream from the 4.2's tailpipes. MMMmmmmmm...
I actually test-drove two S4's on Saturday, I'd like some help on the decision (if any) on which one is a better. ~ SEE NEXT POST ~
Thanks, John

A) w w w.autotrader.ca/used_cars_Car_details/Calgary_Alberta_2005_AUDI_S4_2007030.html?srcID=5& frnID=8129090&cofid=2004102610849706&prv=Alberta&r =20
First car ~ 2005, black, 109k KMS, 6spd man, white int/carbon trim
* my overall opinion of this car - it has been taken care of...
Deficiencies
- lower door molding (driver-side rear door) separating
- carbon dash-trim (ashtray & above glove box) cracked very noticiably
- glovebox hinge completely broken on 1 side
- sunroof switch very loose/flimsy
- brake-fluid well below "MIN" line
- AND LAST BUT DEFINATELY NOT LEAST - it had a crank-knock on cold-start...
Other than that, I liked the car... And although I hate the idea of owning a black car (paint maintainence), they look sooo good black'd out (dark tint & all black wheels)...

Second car ~ 2005, Nogaro blue, 6spd man, 127k KMS/80k miles, 2-tone blk&white int/alum trim
Overall opinion of this car - I think it's a better car than black one, but...
Deficiencies
- clearcoat peeling/deteriorating in 2-3 spots, two 1/4" dents in passenger A-pillar & roofline above rear window
- rear headrests won't go all the way down (binding on 1 side)
- 1/4" dent in aluminum dash-trim, above glovebox (almost the same spot as the black car, wierd)
- drivers seat bolster/lumbar not working, seat bottom fairly worn also
- Last, it's an American vehicle (I'm hesitant, regardless of what people say on the internet)
I reeeeaaaalllly liked this car, it drove nice and was in abit better condition than the black S4...
Both have somewhat "higher" KMs, but aftermarket warranty is available for both (Global Warranty)...
And both are priced the same, $22,900... The blue-car dealer will give me $1000 off whatever warranty I buy (or a 1yr powertrain-"plus" warranty)...

Re: The "new guy"...
while the A4 can certainly be modded to meet or surpass S4 horsepower levels, so too can the S4 be modded.
i.e. there are a great bunch of bolt on mods that will take the car to around 400hp/400 ft lbs torque, and that doesn't involve forced induction. JHM makes a whole bunch of great stuff.
JHM also has a twin turbo kit including forged internals which, for around $18,000 will make your car capable of pushing some 700hp. That's insanity, but again, not many know the truth about this platform.
Either way, I'm sure you'll do well. Just one caveat - all my friends who have modded A4s with big turbos tend to sell them not long after they finish the build...and many move on to an S4 or M3 or something that is out of the box quick and maybe a little more rare.
