Default Mk II headlight replacement.

I purchased the 2008 3.2L TT.
The stock Headlights do not have the angel eyes like the newer models.
I am wondering if I can buy the newer ones and not have installation issues.
Will it work? Are the part numbers interchangeable?

Here is the step by step for the DLR's as promised ( ALL PROPS GO TO TT57ROG )

Remember there are no permanent changes or modifications in this process. If you don't like the results everything can be stripped out and put back to original without any hassle.

Items you need

1. 2 x LED strips from Ebay
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/30cm-White-12-LED ... 634.c0.m14

2. Double sided tape
3. Black electric tape
4. Ruler
5. Craft knife
6. 9v Battery
7. A bit of rigid plastic not too thick

First job is to strengthen the LED strips with some rigid plastic as they are a bit too flexible when you get them. This is where you need to be inventive. I used a plastic window blind and had to cut two strips joined together by double sided tape to make the LED's rigid enough to introduce them into the headlight.
The LED's came with detachable wires via a connector, so I put a bit of the black electric tape around the connector so the wire would not come apart from the LED when they are introduced into the headlight

Next remove the headlights as per this post
viewtopic.php?f=19&t=125387&start=15
and this basically how it works

Once the headlight is removed take out the sidelight rubber bung and pull out the sidelight

You can now introduce the LED through the sidelight hole (sorry no photos of this stage) You have to maneuver the LED a bit but it slided in pretty easily when you get it through the hole. The Strip will follow the line of the headlight curve and drop to the bottom this is the position it wants to be in.

Next wire the LED's to the 9 volt battery to ensure they are in the position you want them.

If your happy with the position of the LED's tape the connecting wire inside the cavity to stop the LED's from moving side to side

Next the wiring.
Cut off the excess wire (Leave plenty to strip the wires back) remove the bulb from the sidelight holder lay the stripped wire into the connectors inside the holder.

Note the wires are positive and negative. At this stage you may lay the wire the wrong way round there is no way of telling if you have got it right or wrong. 50/50 chance of it being right. But don't worry at this stage as it is easy to swap them over when you connect the headlight back up. I got one right and one wrong when I did it.
Make sure the wires don't bridge then push the bulb back into the holder

Finally simple stuff the sidelight loosely back into the cavity and replace the rubber bung.

The very last thing to to is to connect up your headlight and switch on your sidelights to make sure you got the wiring right. If not simply take the bulb out swap the wires and try again. If the DLR's work refit the headlight.

Hi robbie_boy, thanks for the nice write-up.

I would love to do the same to my 2008 TT roadster 2.0t but I am concerned that the turn flasher will be interfering with the new DRL.

Can you please post pictures of your DRL with the flasher blinking to show us how they interact with each other.

Thanks

So I added LED strip to my headlights last night. Worked perfectly thanks to robbie_boy and TT57ROG for the great write-up. Took me about 3 hours to complete and this includes 1 hour of trial and error to find the proper plastic backing.

If you decide to do it, make sure you order 3 LED strip (small investment at $3 each). I am glad I did as I damaged one trying to use a too thick backing.

According to this procedure, the LED strip is connected to the corner light so it is turning on with the position lights (3rd position on the light switch) and not instead of the DRL. No bigdeal as it is a manual process instead of the automatic DRL. I will look in the future to rewire the LED to the proper bulb if possible (the high beam low voltage one that is being used as DRL on my model year)

As for the flashers, there is no problem there as the LED strip is about half the width of the flasher reflector and the flasher is much more bright. The flasher just overpowers the LED. If I manage to re-wire the LED to the DRL bulb instead of the corner bulb, then I will try to activate the DRL blinking when flasher on function using VAG-COM. Many people deactivate this function when they have OEM LED DRL.

I will post pictures in the next few days. It was too dark last night with my iPhone to shoot anything interesting...

Once again, thanks for this great forum and its people taking the time to share their finds and experience with everyone. I would not have thought to do this and even if, it would have been much harder without this write-up.
