Default Advice on Rims and winter tires

I am new member to the forums and would like advice on winter tires and new rims for 2008 TT 2.0. I currently have 245/40 18 inch all seasons.

I do not know much about tires so I have a few questions. Are 17 inch rims the best option? Can I go with a more narrow tire? If so, does the impact the type of rim I should buy? What is the name/style of rim type I should look for to fit my TT?

Any suggestions on winter tires?

Much appreciated.

hey,

i have an 09 2.0 TT coupe 225/50 R 17 with all seasons, being in vancouver i'm hoping to get by with them, i don't think you can in winnipeg

i've done alot of research on Tire Rack - Your performance experts for tires and wheels .... it lists what tires/rims will fit ur model and rims. They have alot of surveys and test results and rank the best winter tires

hope this helps!

For me steelies are a no no for such a beautiful car like the TT. I'll go for 17" OEM wheels or atleast OEM Replicas and match it with Nokian Hakka R.

I used the 18" wheels my 09 TTS came with for winter tires and took the opportunity to buy 19" wheels and tires for summer. I bought a set of Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D winter tires from Tire Rack and absolutely loved them last winter. They were great on the snow and ice and even had good performance on the dry pavement.

The 08 TT 3.2 that I had previously came with 19" wheels so I bought (for the larger 3.2's brakes) High Clearance RS6 replicas from Hartmann. They just BARELY cleared the brakes so you will have to be selective with 17" wheels with any 2008-2010 TT model. I ended up selling the car before the winter came and sold the wheels before I had bought tires.

The 03 TT 225 that I had even before that made use of the stock 17" "fat fives" for winter tires. I also took opportunity there to get a larger set of wheels for summer: 18" RS4 replicas from Hartmann.

(Yeah, I've got a thing for dark grey cars!)

There is a 'safe' limit as to what width of tire you can use on a given rim width. Find out what your rim width is and Google what the minimum width tire you can safely use. The skinnier the tire, the more effective grip you will have on traction-limited surfaces. Nokians are pretty much the best Winter tires around, but any higher-rated Winter on Tirerack will suffice. Get studded ones if you want the best traction possible on snow/ice.

My advice is to stay away from studded tires. They are only good on ice. In snow they are no better than normal winter tires, but on dry or wet roads it's like riding on ball bearings. Awful. So, if you do ALL your winter driving on a skating rink studs are fine.
