Perhaps. Stage II for sure. Have the DP coming next week and then I have to decide about the high pressure fuel pump or not.

Hi Tony,
I have an STronic TTS and also have the same misfiring problem but it's only occured since having a remap, in standard trim she was fine - it's very frustrating

This issues with valves makes for very interesting reading, can I ask, how did the dealership discover you had the wrong valves fitted? did they strip and eyeball them or is it possible to identify problem cars by Engine/chassis number only?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated
Bryn

Hey Bryn,

You probably did have the odd random misfire before your car was remapped but didn't realize it. I only noticed it twice at most (months apart) before my car was remapped. We used a VAG-COM tool to scan the car and it showed that the car had actually misfired several times before and after the misfires I had noticed. Once the car was remapped it just made the misfires more noticeable, it didn't cause the misfires. The issue was still with the car having the wrong exhaust valve springs installed whether it was remapped or not. Unless your car has been scanned and had the codes cleared (including by the dealer) any misfire codes should still be stored in the ECU and will include the date and mileage where the misfires occurred.

Unfortunately the information that the dealers need regarding this problem isn't right there in front of their noses. They need to get in touch with the Audi tech line and report the symptoms. After making sure the coil packs and spark plugs are fine, they should be directed to check the exhaust valve springs. The dealer can only tell if you have the wrong exhaust valve springs installed by getting in there and checking.

I happen to have a a really good relationship with my dealer and their service department. If I have a problem and they don't readily have a solution, they are open to suggestion, even when it's regarding other owner's cars that I have read about. And in this case, everyone who I have been in communication with who has experienced the same problem (remapped or not) has had the wrong valve springs installed. Granted, they have all been North American cars, they have all been 2009 S Tronic TTS.

Another suggestion failing the valve spring debacle: with the increased timing of aftermarket maps, it's fairly common to have some misfiring in the 1.8T and 2.0T engines - try a spark plug that is 1 heat range colder and close the gap to ~0.028".

Guys,

Thanks so much for your comments, it's nice to know I'm not alone with this

IIRC the mapper did try different plugs and spacing but with no luck - the car still misfired. Eventually after three days and numerous runs, logs and maps we gave up, the car was returned back to stock settings and all fault codes cleared.

I've been trying VERY hard indeed to get the car to misfire in standard trim but it just wont!. Obviously I'll need some codes stored when I approach Audi so I've bought myself a 'Plug n Play' Bluefin superchip jobie, plan is, upload the performance map, give the car a good thrash so it misfires and stores plenty of fault codes, then call out Audi assist.
I'm guessing he'll try the obvious first - plugs and coil packs, but of course this wont make a difference, then he'll have no choice but to look deeper into it. At this point I'll bring up the subject of valves and see what he has on his technical bulletins.

I'll keep you guys posted with any progress I make

Cheers
Bryn

Quick update, after a full summer of massive driving, heavy acceleration, some track time, playing cat and mouse with the Mounties, and just general FUN... not a single problem or issue. I LOVE my TTS!

Angry Re: 2009 TTS - Engine misfire and valve springs replacement

I know this is an old thread hopefully someone catches this post. I purchased a used 2009 TTS with 15K miles on it. im a very aggresive driver and within a week experienced random misfires and a solid check engine light, with the advise from this thread had dealer confirm issue and replace valve springs on exhaust side, and spark plugs. car was running mint for a week and then today in sports mode under heavy acceleration the check engine light started flashing, the light went off on its own when I eased off the gas. although the check engine light was flashing I did not notice any loss in power, any other suggestions on what the issue could be? will the audi dealer take the car in again for diags without a solid check engine light? the issue will be impossible for them to duplicate since they refuse to road test over 55mph.

Issue only occurs in sports mode, under heavy acceleration and over 75mph.

Any and all input is welcome, thanks.

Hi Adrenaline,
Sorry to here of your problems, I know from experience this misfiring issue is really frustrating.
As you know I had my valve springs replaced and all was well, however I have had further issues and this time round it was fuel related.
The car never seemed to start very well from cold after the valve springs were replaced, it always started but it struggled as if starved of fuel.
Basically same as you, valve springs replaced and all was well for quite some time then all of a sudden got engine check flashing! I cant remember what the code was but it related to low pressure on fuel rail. The car is at the dealers now and has been for the last 4 f***ing weeks!
Latest update is they have a new fuel pump order, apparently the selenoid was faulty and not supplying correct fuel - hopefully a new pump will sort it.
All I can suggest is you find out what the check code is on yours (it will have stored something) and go from there.

The code will be stored on the car. Regardless of whether or not your engine light is not, the dealer will be able to retrieve the codes and help diagnose the issue.

Personally I never had any issues after my valve springs were replaced. Good luck!

Hey guys. New to the forum. Sorry to revive an old thread but its very relevant to my issues. I have a 2009 tts, having the misfire issue and engine warning light coming on when push it hard. Have also had a remap.

Now car is booked in with audi but what I'm wondering is

1. Will they pick up the map if I leave it on there

2. If I get the map removed, will it clear the fault codes?

Cheers!
