Thanks Cargenelle for the specifics. I am considering my options and running out of RIV -Form ll time deadlines. My research shows that their really is little data that justifies the actual difference in theoretical crash test results- comparing Canadian against International TT's. Also, Transport Canada is considering doing away with the Cdn bumper law by the middle of 2008 from a recent Globe and Mail article. Meanwhile, I have a 2006 Special Edition US Roadster (1 of 99) with Sport line bumpers that I sure don't want to dismantle and repainted just for the sake of Canadian car citizenship. I am in a "real pickle". Audi USA has been very gracious over the phone but after 10 days they have yet to sent me the bumper info/ recall notice. They originally promised it in two days.
In the meantime, I have installed running lights and converted to kms; but not to the idea of Canadian bumpers. I am located in Ontario and running out of (my mind) time.

You're right - does suck big time especially for the 2mph difference. You can contact Transport Canada (phone number on the RIV-Form 2) and ask for an extension (not likely 6 mos though, but you can try). Also, contact Audi USA and request a faxed copy sent to you directly and they will further it up with a copy in the mail. It's a timely process - I can confirm, as I've just completed the inspections and waiting for the "sticker". Just so you are aware, Canadian Tire did the final inspection in under 10 minutes....and didn't even ask about the bumper mods (though I had the backup paperwork). If I can be of any help, feel free to ask. Have patience...you'll get through it without too many scars

Hi Cargenelle,

A few more questions for someone who has survived this!:
1.So what province did you have your inspection done in? I hear Alberta is really lax and doesn't bother with the bumpers. 2.Also, depending on what province and different protocals among provinces, what "sticker" are you waiting for? I thought Canadian Tire put a sticker on one of yours forms and that was what you needed to show to your insurance agent (provincial ICBC in BC) in order to permanently insure your imported car? 3.Do you have to wait for a sticker in the mail from RIV before you can insure your car (although again I know private insurers will insure your car right away but in BC you have to pass inspection first before you can insure your car and until such a time you have to buy expensive 10 permits at about $175)?
4. Also, even though you didn't need your backup paperwork did you have a "work order" showing the installation? And was that from a shop or did you have receipts proving you had it painted as well? Did you actually do the bump mods or did you just get together the "paperwork"? Thanks again.

I live in Manitoba where inspection was done. I lived in Alberta for 17 years, and agree that each province has different types of insurance - but I wouldn't consider Alberta lax about a federal requirement.
When your modifications are complete, you will require two safeties (provincial & another for Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV)). Although Canadian Tire is the authorized inspection agency for RIV, they likely won't work on Audi vehicles in case they require repair or parts....so I suggest that the provincial safety be done by an Audi dealer. Canadian Tire will do the RIV (form 2) inspection and stamp that copy - (three copies) they will forward the stamped original via fax showing that you have met the requirements. After they receive notification, RIV will forward you a sticker that you place inside your door jamb. In the meantime, you can take the other two copies to your insurance agency - one of which is yours to keep. In Manitoba, we are able to put temporary insurance on a vehicle until it's ready to be insured longterm.
Re work on bumpers.....yes I did get them done (grrrrr). One of the auto body shops I deal with, was able to order the parts with their company discount which saved a few dollars. They removed old, installed and painted new ones. ***Ahem....if anyone needs a set of US spec bumpers.... giggles. The RIV form specifies that the receipts for parts and work order be copied and faxed into them. The thing is, for all the time involved and the running around....it was a comedy to see how quickly CT did the final inspection. I overheard someone mention the dollar amt Canadian Tire gets for the these inspections....and they're just pumping out the vehicles. Have you received your copy of the RIV form 2 yet? If not, you can ask them to email you the form to expedite things. I can send you a copy of the form they sent me...but I'll require your email addy. I hope some of this helps.

Why is it that I see on a regular basis cars that do not meet Canadian specs at lots in both Ontario and Alberta? These TT's have bumpers that do not CDN specs.

Just check out Auto Trader ca and you will see cars across the counrty advertized with US bumpers. How can these dealers bring these obvoius US cars in and sell them without meeting CDN specs. that you and I would have to meet???

I currently have an 05 TT coupe and would like to get a roadster, I think I'll bring one in from the states and switch my current bumpers to the US car to meet the CDN specs, any thoughts on this idea????

The only thought I have on this, is that after the final inspection most enthusiasts replace the new bumpers with the original. There is a difference between them and I definately prefer the original look with no bumperettes (tumors, as often referred).

If you are mechanically inclined, you can get ahold of used cdn bumpers thru forums like this.....replace existing (without painting) and have inspected....once stamped, you can replace them again and resell the cdn ones. This seemed like an extraordinary expense for someone like myself who doesn't know one wrench from another and needs to rely on a professional. By the time I removed, replaced and switched back.....would have been too time consuming and expensive. The only caution would be to produce a bill of sale for parts (you could explain that you replaced the bumpers yourself or thru a friend). In the long run, I still believe I'm further ahead having purchased this TToy thru the states vs locally and the new paint job was something I would have done by Spring.

There are numerous owners who have chosen to have the bumps removed, filled and painted to look like original......so it may be deceiving when you see them in a lot or from the distance. That's not to say that there are some US specs out there.

Thumbs down Re: TT importation _ question re bumpers

I have an 05 225hp TT, I would like to remove the front bumper add on, the rear I will leave as it doesn't look too bad, has anyone had this done and if so at what cost? What does it involve, is it a stick on, what??
