I was under the impression that any US model TT being imported into Canada would have to have the bumpers changed in order to meet Cdn certification. However, after recently talking with someone who has imported an '01 TT convertible and has it licensed in Alberta, that appears not to be the case as he has Alberta plates and the original US bumpers.

hmmm. Further investigation tells me I'm not getting a proper story from this fellow and that I will need Cdn. bumpers. See my other post if anybody is interested in a bumper swap...smooth tumorless US bumpers for bumpy, notchy Cdn. ones.

I imported a TT from the US. You do need Canadian bumpers. Or at least paperwork that says you changed the bumpers. My mechanic supplied me with the paperwork.

I've spoken with RIV numerous times on this issue. They have stated that even if Cdn. Tire doesn't know the difference between Cd. and US bumpers, RIV will NOT certify the car for Cdn. registration UNTIL they see all the parts ordered new, from a recognized Audi dealer and proper labour charges showing that all the behind the bumper support structure was installed as well. I received quotes from 2 Audi dealers in Alberta to do the work according to RIV guidelines and the cost was in the $5500 - $6,000 Cdn. range (including taxes).
If you were able to obtain your certification through some sort illegal maneuver (clearly what you did does not follow the RIV guidelines), I guess it only shows that whenever given the oppportunity for an illegal profit with a less than certain possibility of being caught, people will not hesitate to do it.
Further, those officials who attempt to justify their outrageous salaries by saying they are providing a valuable protective service for Canadians by ensuring, in this case, safety regulations are being strictly followed are merely as bad liars and cheaters as the people attempting to con them. They obviously say one thing but do another in terms of supervision and enforcement.
And people wonder why scammers that roll odometers back on cars for hundreds of thousands of illegal profit dollars get into that business. Because judges, who are paid, hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in salaries, slap them on the wrist with a weights and measures act infraction (instead of a deliberate criminal fraud conviction under the criminal code of Canada) and the fines levied generally represent less 10% of their illegal gains. Odometer rollback specialists pay their lawyers far more than than they ever pay in fines after being caught red handed with hundreds of illegal rollbacks.
A useless system that enriches the undeserving and protects no one.

Hi guys, i similiarly have the import bumper problem and got quoted 5000$ as well in Calgary. This makes this i guess the next in line for a bumper swap. I got perfectly clean '03 TT bumpers and would be willing to swap even if that means paying extra.

Boy! It looks like we are all getting screwed by this bumper swap. I guess the guys at RIV own someone in Ottawa. I can't believe we have to get this done at an Audi dealer who wants to rip us all off. Is this a covert way of trying to keep US Audis out of Canada, the land of the screwed? Anyone want to swap US bumpers for Canadian?

Does anyone out there know a good work around for these TT bumpers. And what excatly needs to be done to bring them in to compliance. I would think that just the under skin reinforcements would have to be done?

ok what about the 2008 TT bumpers is it the same???got to change the bumpers? for 48000 U.S. plus 12% for 3.2 convert thats a deal!! at my dealership they told me 68000 cdn plus 14% well the dealership i got my first TT(02 6spd)
