Hey otto,

I have a copy of the letter. It's officially called "JZ campaign" and it only applies to Canada. In the US, there's already a lawsuit settlement but in Canada Audi has not yet issued a full recall.

What Audi is basically doing is offering you a FREE inspection - and they would do the following:
1) if your original timing belt is still good, then your warrnty extends to 169,000km
2) if your original timing belt is no good, then you are advised to do the timing belt service
3) if you do not do the timing belt service (per dealer advise) after the inspection was done, then you are on your own.

i see this basically as Audi Canada trying to get out of their reponsibility for equiping our cars with defective parts.

I can't see any chance of any Audi dealer advising their client that the timing belt is okay.

There's a decision matrix attached to the letter, i'll scan it and post it up here.

Thanks for the info Neova. I was wondering about this with my TT. Although I just hit 70k on it, the age of the timing belt was worrying me.

I'm eagerly anticipating the posted letter.

Deez01TT

based on your mileage you are definately eligible for the extended warranty provided you get the free inspection done before July 31 2009 (extended from the original deadline of Sept 30 200.

I've posted the letter in a new thread

Good to know, thanks for all the info on this Neova.

The vehicle has had all the maintenance done by Audi Canada, so they should have everything on file for the timing belt inspections at 40k and 80k (they do my maintenance according to the time passed and not on mileage).

So I'll make an appointment with a local Audi dealership before July 31st. Any idea if this is a free service?

The inspection is 100% free.

The timing belt service is not free.

THe whole idea behind this "free inspection" is so that if the dealer spots a defective belt, they'll tell you that you should change it (you pay for it), and if you don't, then they have it on record that you refused and if the belt broke eventually then you have a much harder time to prove that it was broken due to defect (as opposed to normal wear and tear).

Just wanted to update everyone. It took a bit of time but Audi has decided to replace the motor. Someone earlier in the post mentioned they engine was about $6000. I was quoted $10,000.00+. The dealer has the parts on order and it should be in next week. Both Audi Canada and my dealer have been excellent to deal with. The only hold up was when they were determining whether only the head would be replaced or the whole engine. Audi originally wanted to replace only the head. After the engine was taken apart the dealer felt there was too much damage done to the pistons and cylinder wall (and likely bearings, rods, rings, etc) and the labour to do a bottom end rebuild would be more than the cost to put in the new motor.

Hi, I bought a used 2001 TT Quattro Roadster (225HP) on July 31st, 2009. Car hs 112,000km on it. I think the timing belt let go today, and that the motor had a catastrophic failure.......

Any suggestions on recourse with Audi, or a timing belt recall?

Thanks

Craig

Taking it back to the dealer it came from may be a good option. If you want to keep the car this may be an opportunity to get an evn better car than you purchased. I would call audi canada and let them know the situation. Tell them what happened and ask how you can find out if the timing belt inspection was done. If it was then you are covered under warranty. If it was not there was no way for you to know it needed to be done (and should have been checked the next time you bring the car for service at the dealer). My inspection was not done and they covered me as I did have my car dealer serviced. I do know of someone who did not dealer service the car and had the same problem and they were covered as well.

All they need to determine was if the timing belt tensioner caused the damage. The other thing they told me that was covered is if the crank broke due to sludge. The whole process took about 6 weeks.

Good luck and let me know if you need more information.
