Re: timing belt recall??
Well, after doing more research it looks like I should be OK. The 105k Jazz mentioned is 105000 miles (the US interval) which equals 168981KM. It looks like as part of a settlement in the US there is an extended warranty on the part up to 169000km. Had I received a letter I would be responsible to bring it to the dealer to have it checked. I did not receive a letter but my car has been at the dealer on several occasions since the letter was issued. I also spoke to someone that had the repair covered by Audi. His car is the same year and within a couple hundred km of mine! The only difference was his services were not completed at an Audi dealer. They will be looking at the car next week and I will wait for them to see what they will offer. The dealer has always been good to me and with several Audi's in the family I'm sure we will come to an agreeable solution.
Also, I see in the US settlement incidentals are covered including towing and rental vehicles. Hopefully they will be able to cover that here in Canada as well. I had to pay $176 for a Dodge Charger to drive back home in as I had my wife and 3 month old baby with me and you can't put a car seat in a tow truck. On top of the rental charge it cost $40 in gas to drive 310km!

Re: timing belt recall??
good luck OTTO.
as much as i love my TT, i have been sorrily disappointed by Audi Canada and Richmond Audi's response to the timming belt issue. a friend who has a 2001 Audi experienced the same difficultites trying to deal with our local dealer and now we both travel to Bellingham, US to have work done on our cars.
as an aside, last visit to Richmond Audi by my friend, they couldn't figure out what was causing an electrical problem. they told him that the car was getting old and to expect this sort of thing! they then told him he should be considering a new TT. he took the car to the Bellingham dealership and they were able to troubleshoot and repair the electrical issue in under an hour. unfortunately, there just seems to be some inferior dealerships around that Audi Canada doesn't seem to care about either....
OTTO, keep us posted.

I can't believe they would treat a customer like that and then tell them to buy another one! I have been very happy with the service I have received from the dealer and the mechanics are quite trustworthy (not recommending unnecessary repairs) and always making sure the car is "right" before giving it back to me.

Re: timing belt recall??
We just did a full TB Kit replacement on an '01 TT 225HP including all belt wear parts, water pump, t-stat, coolant flush, accessory belt for $900. The TT was at 140K KMs with original belt. It was caught just on time as every tooth had a thru crack across the full width of the belt and could have failed at any moment. The water pump was also found to be leaking and the t-stat was failing causing low engine temp.

Sounds like a horrible dealership experience. In their defense however, sometimes the tech who receives the car for diagnosis doesn't have the electrical expertise as the next guy. I worked for Audi/Vw for 7 years and have seen my share of guys that shouldn't be fixing cars for a living working at the dealerships. The solution is simple, if you have a good dealership experience, take note of the tech that worked on the car and request him for the next visit. A good tech armed with the dealership wealth of knowledge and specialty tools will surpass any 'bob's garage'
To further my point, I see on a regular basis, after expensive parts replacements and misdiagnosing, vehicles towed in from 'outside' shops that can't figure out simple problems. The customer in the end has no idea that the vehicle was towed to the dealership for repair and diagnosis.
just my 2 cents.
