Default Hardtop vs Convertible- and why?

All other things being equal- engine specs, interior, exterior colour, mileage, mechanical condition, price...

Assume for the moment that there were 2 cars side by side, equal in EVERY way, except that one was a hardtop, and the other was a convertible. Which one would you choose, and why?

Or, if you have already gone through that decision making process, which one DID you choose, and why?

The reason for my question is this; I love a sunroof, and the convertible is the ultimate sunroof! The hartop is not available from Audi with one, but... What about our Canadian winters? I believe the TT has heated seats which are a bonus in the wintertime, but how are the convertible tops for retaining the cars heat as you drive down the highway on your daily winter's comute?

Thanx Gang.

Now this is just my opinion, but I think the coupe is more distinct and captures the classic and unique look of the MK1 TT, the convertable lines do not flow as nice in my opinion. To me, the convertable seems a bit like a chicks car, it's very nice, just not my choice.

Hey Alan, I just looked up the pics of your white '03 TT. Very nice clean lines from the side profile view. I can see why you would choose the coupe. The one thing I like about the look of the convertible, is the individual chrome roll bars behond each seat's headrest, when you have the top down. When the convertible top is up, you are right; the lines are not very nice really...

Thanks, even though I've had my car 3 years or so now, and it an 2003 for god's sake, I still look at it and think it's a very neat car. The MK1 coupe is just more unique in look then the Mk2's I think.

"Unique"?! You said my favourite word... With "unique" in mind, what kind of "tastefully unique" things have you seen on a TT Coupe, that could express one's "uniqueness"?

Or is that another thread for another day...

The Coupe is much more distinctive looking IMO. I think that the design is one of the iconic cars of our time, along with the new Mini. And with the coupe, you get an enormous capacity to transport stuff, I can easily get my bike in the back, or sails or skis. Try that with the roadster.

Unless you have a compulsive need to work on your tan, convertibles are for chicks. That's my 2 cents. I'll put on my fire suit before the flaming begins.

Okay, I'm ready.......

Thanx for your input Wally. The roadster with the top up just doesn't do it, when it comes to clean lines. The coupe definately takes the cake. As far as stowage is concerned, the back of the coupe is huge indeed. I was initially leaning heavily toward the Roadster, because I think the top-down convertible is the ultimate sunroof, and I do like the profile of the top-down view. However, practicality rears its ugly head...

And by the way Waheed; a "Chick-mobile"??? Come on now. I'm not going to pull out the flame-thrower just yet, but really... Is every top-down convertible sportscar a girly-car? I think not... Porsches; the classic Triumph TR6; Jags... They may not be American Muscle, but REALLY...

Michael,

I'm not serious, just stirring the pot a bit. There is nothing girly about a Ferrari spyder or Porsche convertible and the Jag XKE Roadster is one of my favorite all time cars.

No harm done... The XKE was a favourite of mine ever since I built a plastic model of one in elementary school, a VERY long time ago.

Its just that the good weather season is so short here in Winter-peg, that a drop-top is IMO the only way to extend the enjoyment of the sunshine. I've even been known to borrow a friend's Miata (sorry for cussing on an Audi forum) and go for a drive on a sunny January Sunday afternoon, with the top down, wearing all my winter gear- and a BIG SMILE...
