Haldex service experience

Re: Haldex service experience
The Haldex should have been done during the 32,000 and 64,000km service interval.
A lot of Techs FORGET to do it since 1) it's not very common and 2) very few techs know how to do it.
I looked at the service records for the 32K and 64K and the previous owner was only charged 1 hour labour and about $100 in parts, which tells me that only the Engine Oil, fitler and air filters were changed!
The Quattro in the TT is really an electonically activated AWD. when going straing it's 90% FWD and only where there is a rotational difference between the front and rear axel (e.g. during slippage and cornering) then the Haldex clutch kicks in and engages the rear axel to transfer power.
If your haldex is gone, it's a $2500 part replacement, and you are left with a FWD TT with an extra 100lbs of dead weight on the rear axel that doesn't do anything!

I've checked my cars service records also and it shows a Haldex service being performed at 58,000km's. My TT's now coming up on 90,000kms and I plan to do the Haldex service together with my next oil change, and likely doing it myself. The next big item is my timing belt. I plan to do this at 100,000km's as all the posts on this topic are making me totally paranoid about it breaking early!

Re: Haldex service experience
i did my TB @ 138,000km the belt looks fine to me...no cracks or anything out of order...was going to wait until 155,000km as the old book tells you....but i was also paranoid from all the talk.lol

Re: Haldex service experience
Alan, have you gone for the free TB inspection yet per the JZ campaign? might help you get an idea whether what shape your TB is in (assuming you've gone to an honest dealer)...

Re: Haldex service experience
Nope, haven't gone for the TB inspection. My car is a CPO and I have another year of warranty so I'm going to play stupid about it if my belt should happen to go. I figure that it might be covered under CPO, and like you said, any Audi dealer would be foolish to tell you your timing belt looks fine. I think I heard that if your car is 5 years old they recommend changing it no matter what the mileage. I'm planning to change mine at 100,000km's.

Re: Haldex service experience
Hi,
I just had the haldex service done at Owasco Audi for $187+tax. The service advisor was Jason Turner and it was done under 1 hour.
Seems reasonable since to buy the parts to do it myself would cost $60USD for parts and $25USD for that special wrench from ECStunning.com, plus shipping and brokerage. So I'm just paying $115/hr labour for the audi dealer and saving myself some hassle as I don't have the proper tools to do it. I think it requires a lift so you can get under the car...
I had called several Audi Dealer in the GTA, and to my surprise not too many technicians have any idea on the Haldex service because it is unique to the Audi TT.
For your reference here are some quotes I got
Audi Dealers
Audi Uptown Markham $380+tax (3hrs - 1st quote), $551 tax in (3hrs - 2nd quote)
Againcourt Audi Scarborough $320+tax (2hrs)
Pfaff Audi (Vaughan Mills) $470 tax in (2hrs)
Owasco Audi (Whitby) $186+tax (1hr)
Non-Dealers
Indepedent Tunning $180 cash (1hr)
seems like Owasco Audi are the only dealership that seems to have the know-how on the Haldex service.
I tried not to burst into laughter when i got some of these quotes over the phone - some of these incompetent dealers are trying to make me pay 2-3 hours labour for a 45-min job while giving their techs time to learn on the job on how to do a Haldex service...
The only problem with Owasco Audi is that they don't open for service on weekends which meant I had to take half a morning off work to get it done on the weekday, and the $60km round trip as well...

The whole service took about 2.5 hours. Still worth the drive because Barrie Audi wanted $450 for just the Haldex service!!

Re: Haldex service experience
just did the haldex oil and filter change myself. audi mississauga (or is this bramgate?) wanted $180+tax. bought a filter wrench from worldimpex and oem oil and filter from dealer and did it in say 1hr. total cost including wrench almost same as dealer but wrench will pay for itself on my next haldex service.
