Non sense. Last time my mechanics called up Audi and he got quoted $1100 for the whole rear bumper. I think the front shouldn't cost more than the rear. So $2200 for the bumpers plus painting ($500) + installation (another few hundreds?). This not even closes to your $3500 quote.

RIV will NOT certify a US car that has only had its bumper covers changed. They require all the support and backup hardware BEHIND the bumper. They will check for part numbers and if you haven't replaced ALL the correct parts, you don't get a "pass". That plus adding tax is where you get up to the $5500 figure. That does include retail pricing on the parts and labour. If you can get the Audi dealer to give you wholesale or trade pricing on the parts, and can find a mechanic / body shop that will work for wholesale pricing, it will be a little cheaper.
Install of all the parts req'd is MUCH higher than you're estimating.
By the way, I was quoted just over $1000 for the rear bumper and $1500 for the front (covers only).
You'll recall, I had asked whether you were willing to give up not just the covers, but, the re-bars and associated parts as well. As it turned out, even with all the correct parts, RIV still insisted on seeing new parts purchased.
I suppose you could purchase all the parts, take pics of them, then swap bumpers and all other parts with someone, do the repaint and install, show the car to Cdn. Tire and submit the invoices to RIV. After you get the "pass", if the Audi dealer would take back all the unused new parts, without too much of a restocking charge, you could probably do it that way, but, far more trouble than it's worth in my opinion.

About daytime running lights. My Audi dealer quoted me $500 per light. I took the TT to my regular mechanic to do it. He didn't know how, so he took it to the same dealer that gave me the quote. They did it for him for $57. What a bunch of crooks.

I have both bumper strips (had mine removed) i wonder if you could just temporarily stick them on the car for the inspection and say you had the Canadian bumpers...

I am importing a TT next week and was shocked today when the Audi service guy said the front bumper had to be replaced - I thought a swap of US to Cnd bumper mounts was all that was required? Please advise ASAP.

What is the difference in the US / Cnd bumpers? Is it mounts?

as of June 25,2008 you do not require the bumper mods as transport Canada has harmonized the bumpers to the US and European standard
