did the TT come with a block heater?? if so, where is it?

My '03 did, but it was a dealer install so in your balmy climate you may not have one. That being said, I never used it. I have used the oil pan heater a couple of time on the TTS, though. Works really well. Much more efficient.

You don't ever get a block heater, what you got was an oil pan heater. They stick them on at the dealership, or you can go to Canadian Tire and buy one for $100 like i did.

They work great, you won't be disappointed, you can easily do it, or any mechanic can do it for probably an hours shop rate. DO NOT GO TO THE DEALERSHIP! they quoted my $350 for the part (they get it from polar patch, which is the same as canadian tire) and they quoted 2 hours labour. i did it myself in 30 minutes without a hoist.

I just picked up a 1.5kW Zerostart coolant heater from Canadian Tire; they're on sale right now for around $50. I don't know why people use ~200w heaters when you can get something like the Zerostart; plus, you can put the heat right in the head. The only advantage I see to pan heaters is your oil will be warmed up, and thus less viscous, for cold starts. Ease of installation could be a factor, but who cares about a couple of hours when you only have to do it once.

I had a 1.5kW on my TDI and it was superb -- at -15°C in a non-heated garage, my car would be at operating temp. when I started it (after having the heater on for ~2 hours). Install in my TDI took less than an hour, and that's including draining the coolant and refilling with fresh stuff. I don't have a Bentley manual yet (it's in the mail) and it's been too cold to go pull the covers off the TT and snoop around, but I suspect the install will be similarly simple. I think the 1.8T cooling system is similar to the TDI.

If you're interested, I can let you know exactly where to put it once I've installed it.

I see your freezing your *** off also! Central Ontario is really cold too, -30°C the last two mornings. Thankfully my TT is the garage queen so it's 10-15°C warmer in there. My wife's Jetta (and the wife) are hating life right now out in the driveway, and those -30°C start-ups sound kinda bad. Since I always get the garage, I brush off her car and spark it up for her to maintain the marital bliss.

My 2008 TT didn't come with a block heater...couldn't find one any where (dealer said Audi doesn't have such a part)...had to settle for a oil pan heater (a bit bigger than a credit card)...works great..even in Saskatoon...about $200 all in...

I may be interrupting in something and a little late but anyways, I found your discussions very interresting.
If I get your points, Zerostart would be a good options for the winters we have here in QC but should I also ask for the oil pan heater ?

The ZeroStart will put much more heat into your engine since they're 750-1500W vs. ~200W; the oil pan heater is only good for heating your oil up. Ideally, I'd go with both; but, if I had to choose one, it would definitely be a coolant heater.
