Default 2004 TT S-Line - ESP light

My ESP light is on all the time. One day it came on has been on ever since. The stealership said it was the AWD control module, that they could replace for $2000. They said they reset the code on it but it came right back on. Any other ideas? I want a second opinion, and if that is what it is, anyone know how I can find the part number, or where I can get a used one?

Scan your car and get the code that it's throwing. The dealership's approach to repairs is to just replace stuff. Post the code up and I'll tell you which part of the system to check.

Also, you might want to make sure the MAF is plugged in securely. I believe this throws the ESP warning light.
When I unplugged mine, I'm sure that was the light that appeared.

Mine came on a few months back and it turned out to be the MAF as well. Getting the code read first is a good start before forking it out.

Thanks for the responses. I finally got the code from the stealership. They wasted a week and a half trying to get it from Accounting (I guess that is where they archive the work orders), then when I pushed harder, they talked to the tech that did the scan and he pulled it off the computer.

The code is 01324 - Control Module for All Wheel Drive (J492), no communication.
There is also a secondary code that the guy said might just be a by-product: 01312 - Powertrain Data Bus.

Seems to be some info the on UK forum on this, but inconsistent responses. Sounds like the first thing to check is wiring (including the MAF).

To re-cap, the ESP light is always on. The ESP button doesn't affect it. Not sure if the AWD is working, but I suppose I could test this on a gravel road. The tech said the AWD should not be affected. The brake/ABS light is NOT on.

If it is the controller, it sounds like it doesn't matter which TT model it is. Also it sounds like the options are for a 2nd-hand stock one, or go for an upgraded blue one.

Sounds like comms are failing to the Haldex Controller or the Haldex Controller itself has failed.

The Haldex Controller is an electronic module mounted directly on the Haldex Unit. Maybe check fuses and inspect wire harness / connectors before replacing module. If you do have to replace the module, there are aftermarket performance modules available if interested.

Problem is fixed. Ordered the Haldex Performance from HPA, and the ESP light is off. AWD is working again - no more laying rubber when I floor it from a standstill. Independent did the install.

With about 3 weeks of driving, it is transparent during normal driving. This Performance model (aka Agent Orange - mine is the "stealth" version which is unpainted) kicks in during hard acceleration and hard braking , but otherwise is FWD. It doesn't bother to wait for front-wheel slip before switching to AWD. Doesn't seem to affect gas mileage (other than the heavy foot usage testing it out!). It seems to keep the nose down during hard acceleration (which actually makes it feel like it isn't accelerating as much because the car stays level).

It'll be fun to try it in the winter when the snow comes.

Mike,

I am about to order my own HPA Haldex controller.
I drive the car summertime and bring it to track days troughtout summer.

Can you tell me if you feel a big difference and how's the switch between front and awd?
