Default use of throat mic in a convertible

I posted this also in the TT forum but thought it might be better here:

Has anyone ever use a throat mic similar to what security guards use during concerts for use with cell phone in convertible?

I was told this is the solution to be able to use your cell phone while the top is down without having to hold the cell to your ear (illigal here).

Here is what I am talking about: EBay Throat Mic FBI Style

I would like to know who has ever tried these things and if it would work in a convertible environment.

It is very difficult to use a cell phone in a convertible and I hate having to close the roof for a phone call.

Last summer, my wife runs the TT to going at work. More than once, she called me with the top open and I didn't have difficulty to heard her...even in my phone on ear or in the other car (Kia Koup 2011).

More than that, we found that the mic in the TT give a better quality than the newer one in the Kia.

I tell you, I was very surprise of that !! On my side too we thought we had to close the top to speak on the phone.

Wow, I am surprised. I had the bluetooth integration in my 2006 S4 Cabriolet and it was terrible with the top down. Impossible to use. I had to either close the top or take the phone to my ear (without the bluetooth).
I almost got caught by the police in September (would have been a $278 fine), this is why I was looking for an alternative solution. I am glad to hear that the microphone in the TT is better than the one in the S4 because it did not seem to me the ambient noise was much different than the S4 (quite acceptable for a convertible).

I only got to test the convertible once since I got the car in January, but I did not use the phone that time.
