Audi is broadening out its A5 coupé range and leading the charge is the 1.8 TFSI model. We may be used to the idea of a turbocharged 1.8-litre petrol engine from Audi, but this one is brand new.

The four-cylinder engine uses direct petrol injection, which meters the fuel much more accurately to deliver maximum power of 167bhp. Just as handy, and a result of the new fuel delivery system, is the 184lb.ft of peak torque between 1,500 and 4,800rpm.

That's enough oomph to get the A5 1.8 TFSI from 0-62mph in 8.4 seconds and on to 140mph. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard and drives the front wheels.

Quattro four-wheel drive is not an option, but not having to drive all four wheels helps reduce weight and the 1.8 TFSI consequently gives a combined economy of 39.8mpg.

All 1.8 TFSI A5s come with leather seats, climate control and rear parking sensors, while you can order the Sport upgrade for £950. Prices for the new A5 model start at £26,190.

That is one hot car. I really like the color. What makes this different than other models, is it the turbocharge or what? I am not sure what the other models have as I have not got my car yet, but very soon.

the coupe should be sick, altho I suspect mainly for the UK at first... I think for Canada they would need Quattro for sure...

I really hate the way Audi has excluded the quattro system from the base models.

For 2007 a base A4 2.0T does not come with quattro. You need to upgrade to the 3.2 litre engine OR buy quattro for 5,000 bucks extra.

I think that it was a dumb move taking away the very feature Audi is famous for,
away from their best selling models the A4 and the A3.

Now they are excluding quattro from the A5.

If I had bought a FWD Audi as my daily driver........I would not have found the joys of driving an Audi ......I probably wouldn't have cared if my next car was an Audi or not. I may have gone for a BMW or a Lexus instead. ]

This marketing just doesn't make any sense to me!

How do you expect people to fall in like with the Audi experience when you give them the same product as everyone else?

Agreed! Audi should have set the example for Subaru, not the other way around.... All Audi's should have Quattro, no option! Thats like buying a mustang with the windstar engine.

they take the quattro out so they can have a lower opening price point in ads...

I guess there is always a market for "cheap" luxury cars. I'm sure the base A5 doesnt even come with leather like the lower 3 series. Who pays $40k + for car without leather (or power seats, sunfoor, heated seats, all the stuff that should be standard for ANYTHING over $30k)?

FRANKLY, ALL COMPANIES DO THE SAME THING. FROM LEXUS... TO MERCEDES.

THEY DONT PUT THEIR PRIME FEATURES ON THEIR LOW END CARS.

AT THE END OF THE DAY, PEOPLE SIMPLY WANT TO BE SEEN IN THEIR <FILL APPROPRIATE BRAND NAME HERE>. MAJORITY OF THE DRIVES OUT THERE AREN'T AS EDUCATED AS YOU WOULD LIKE.

AND THEN YOU COME TO THE RICH CUSTOMERS. THEY WOULD LIKE IT IF THIER 150K R8 HAS SIMILAR PROPERTIES AS AN A3.

I DON'T HAVE TO LIKE IT.. I SIMPLY JUST UNDERSTAND.

Don't worry, the only available A5 in Canada is the 3.2L that comes with quattro. And it starts at $52,000.... good luck.
