Exclamation Member Accident

Hey Guys,

This post that one of our members, speedtek, posted on AudiWorld is a sobering reminder to all of us on the road.

The S6 is no more - AudiWorld Forums

He was well equipped driving an Audi, but also very lucky to be alive.

Glad you made it, man.

Man, that's horrible. I feel sad about how many people die in car accidents, then I get angry when I realize that nearly every one of them is preventable. I was about to post in the thread that it's was unlikely the Neon had snow tires, then I saw it posted in a reply. Driving in Northern SK, on snow and ice, on bald All-Seasons is despicable. The owner of the vehicle does not deserve a funeral.

Thats a little harsh dont you think? Some people are not in a position to be able to afford such things

I don't think it is; but, of course, it's just my opinion and there are probably very few people that will feel the same way.

This is obviously just an arbitrary number, but I'd be willing to bet everything that I own that more than 95% of the people that don't have Winter tires could afford them if they made an effort to. Your average car can have a brand-new set of low-end Winter tires for ~$500 - who can't afford that once every 5 years? Mostly just people without vehicles. . .

I'd even bet that half the people that don't run them, have money in the bank, but just choose not to. Of every person I've asked why they didn't run Winters, they all said that they didn't think they needed them.

The reason I posted this was just to remind everyone that it can happen to anyone, not to lay blame or judge. We are all entitled to our opinions. Being that this is a forum it is a place to share opinions. I just hope that everyone involved here has enough sensitivity and compassion to be respectful of what happened and everyone involved.

That being said, I believe it all comes down to thinking that it will never happen to ourselves. It's true that we can be better prepared in the cars we drive or the tires we use, but ultimately accidents still happen. This is, again, just a reminder to take care out there and be responsible however you can.

To be honest, I really hope something good such as a mandatory snow tire law comes out of incidents just like this. A set of snow tires would have easily prevented this from happening. As far as not being able to afford it, what person here or anywhere wouldn't pay $700 if they knew it would save their life?
The trouble is, people just don't understand, when I was explaining the need for snow tires to my mother yesterday she said "but, we have really good all seasons on our Taurus". I just told her that it doesn't matter how good she might think they are, if she drove the same car with a decent set of snow tires she wouldn't believe how much more grip she would have and would wonder why she ever thought the all-seasons were good at all.

Unfortunately the people in this case had to pay the price for their neglect, I found out from witnesses that they had also been driving too fast and passing people in the slush only 5 minutes earlier so I got included in the cost. I am in a helluva lot of pain today and I have an almost constant headache which is directly connected to the torn muscles in the back of my neck, but I'll live with it. The key words here being "live with"

Now does anyone know where I can pick up a nice MK1 TT coupe for a decent price?

This bothers me a bit and maybe I'm not reading it properly but seems fast for the conditions - "I was unable to even slow down any amount as it was pretty much glare ice under the snow blowing across the highway. The Audi impacted their driver's door at close to 90 KM/h". Hopefully you mean that the speed of the two cars would equal 90 and not that you were doing 90 km/hr under the circumstances.

Yes I was doing 90 KM/H on an open highway that had some patches of snow blowing across it. In a 4000 lb Audi with quattro and good snow tires you don't exactly notice that there is an ice issue underneath on those patches. Weather conditions were clear and +1 C on a straight highway and you are in absolutely NO position to judge what was too fast or not as you were not there. The vehicle with **** tires and an inexperienced driver THAT CAUSED the accident was travelling much faster apparently. Two people died and I did nothing wrong, take your high horse and shove it up your ***.

I'm not high horsing anything or anybody but to me (maybe I'm just a chickenshit in the winter!) but 90 sounds fast in snow that's all. I'm not pointing fingers or saying anything against anybody involved. I didn't mean to offend and just wanted to try to understand the situation more. I apologize and will stay out (as I should have).

I'm sorry I snapped at you on that, but I'm dealing with a lot of **** right now in regards to this and I don't need to be second guessing "what if's". The road conditions were completely clear with patches blowing across and if I had been aware of the ice underneath then quite possibly I would have been going slower although even 10 or 20 less wouldn't have prevented the collision if the timing was there. He spun directly in front of me in the oncoming lane and I had almost zero time to react.
