Default Help! How to change my own oil?

I have always had my car care taken of for me but these days I want to do it on my own. I am not always going to have my dad around to change the oil for me. I want to surprise him during my next oil change, so can anyone give me some tips or suggestons?

Go to your local store and buy some oil, our cars take synthetic so the pric eof it might be a bit higher. While there get a proper oil filter, or go to a local Audi dealer and purchese it from there. Let the car run for 5 minutes so the oil gets nice and warm so it can flow easier. Turn off the car!!!Than put the car on a jack/ hoist to raise it up, then locate the oil pan, on the oil pan you will find a screw that you need to unscrew this is where the oil is going to drain from(find some sort of a tray that the oil can drain into and make sure its a proper size), before doing that open the hood and unscrew the oil cap, (some cars oil caps are their dipsticks not sure what model you have), then unscrew the screw on the oil pan. Once the oil drains out on the driver side you should locate the filter and unscrew it. Then put the new filter on, go back underneath the car and put the screw back into the oil pan. make sure they are tightend very well. Then go back up pop the hood and pour the new oil into the oil cap/container labeled properly. and you are done

Thanks for the walkthrough, I am going to study and memorize it and make myself familiar with the tools. I already bought an oil pan, filter and some oil. My car is fairly new so I won't be needing to do it for a while.

A couple things come to mind in reading this:
1) B5 and onwards A4s have a belly pan that hides the oil pan from view. I suspect A6 and A8s have this too. The important thing here is to remove it before changing the oil (duh, but see below) and when you replace it, make sure you replace *each* fastener so it's back the way you started. You really don't want to drive without a belly pan (ask me why I know) and it *will* fall off at high speeds if it isn't attached right (again, ask me why I know). The dealership sells a kit with all the fasteners and clips.

2) some people can't find the drain plug because it's under the belly pan, and end up draining the tranny. For the record, the oil drain is a regular hex bolt. The oil pan it's affixed to is directly on the bottom of the motor, quite close to the front of the car.
