Getting a New Key

Getting a New Key
So the A4 I just got only has one key with it.
Whats the best way to get another switchblade key made? Do I need to go to the dealer?
Funnily enough, but I found a VW switchblade in the trunk that fits into the ignition! Could I have that programmed to work?

Re: Getting a New Key
1998 A4? then it's got the two-peice key/remote, you will have to buy them seperately from dealership, they are like 300 bucks + labor to program key/remote to your immobilizer. Usually dealership charges 1/2 hour labor for programming.
Make sure you bring your ID and ownership when you go order your key, dealership will have to verify the owner of the vehicle, otherwise they won't order it for you

Re: Getting a New Key
The answer is no. Only an Audi dealer can program the keys. If they key could just be ordered and programmed by anyone, there would be a lot of stolen Audis. Do you really need the flip key, or do you just want a backup key in case you lose your main key. If it's just for backup get a cheaper key. My car came with 2 flip keys - 1 regular key - and one tiny wallet key. Just order the regular key and I'm sure the price will be cheaper.

For those that do not use "search function" on the forum:
1. Only The Audi dealer can program the immobilizer part of key- programming.
2. Remote programming is described in Owner's Manual.
3. Actual key cut is $5 (at VW).
4. Hardware - various sources=> choice is yours (I had very positive experience with ebay)

Re: Getting a New Key
A local guy in Oakville has the machine and will do it for way cheaper. I just had a set of 3 done about month ago. See the exhaustive thread in DIY. There may be a local guy around you in AB as well.
