buy in USA, or from dealer in Canada?
Hi...
So with the dollar back up at par.. and my A4 starting to get expensive for maintenance I've been looking at getting a new one....
Learning from mistakes I made when I bought mine - no warranty... I've been looking at A4 CPO + extended warranties from a few dealers in Canada. When I factor in, what I've had to pay to keep it going with repairs etc, I could have just bought a CPO one, and be in about the same price range...
Anyways -
So looking at my options today:
A4 2007-2008 in Canada CPO + Extended with about 60K on it ~ 35K in Canada.
A4 2007-2008 in USA CPO, no extended warranty with about 60K on it - $25K in USA.
From what I can tell, its about $5K after shipping, taxes/duties/registrations to get the Car to Canada. So, landed price about $30K... saving like $5K.. which I can put into the bank for repairs etc later on after the factory warranty goes..
Anyone have any comments on these numbers? I don't know if I'm finding bad numbers in the USA etc have overestimated what it will cost to get the car to canada etc.. but seems like buying in Canada seems to be the way to go to get a car with warranty etc?
Sean

Re: buy in USA, or from dealer in Canada?
Remember, the taxes will be cheaper on a US car than a Canadian one. I just imported a 2007 Q7 that I bought in California. The car was in amazing shape when Compared to vehicles that had been through a few Canadian winters. You will have to pay all taxes, GST and PST (depending on your Province) if you buy at a dealer in Canada or import. The difference is that it is a percentage of the purchase price, which is less than in the USA. The 6.1 % duty is the extra, but still way less than Cdn prices. I saved over $15000 on my Q7 when all was said and done, and it needed no mods to make it compliant to Canadian regs.
If you can take delivery outside of the state you buy it in, you won,t have to pay state tax. The dealer hired a guy to drive the car with me to the state line, paid him 300 to do so, and we signed some things at the Nevada border, and I carried on to Canada, to a very uneventful import.
Also, the Audi certified used car warranty extension won't transfer to Canada, it seems. I got the California dealer to knock his cost of that off the price of the car after we came to a price. He was quite happy to do so. It was about 1500.
You probably know all this stuff already, but I include the info for others reading the post. Your numbers don't seem too far out. The big advantage I found was selection, but I was buying a Q7, not an A4. Such a bigger pool of used in the US.
Cheers,
Tyler

I wound up buying a local car from the audi dealer.. after a bunch of searching, the price difference, worked out to be about $4K.... it was hardly worth it. I wound up getting a certified car with extended warranty... its a multi dimensional decision
