From what I've heard, the A4 refresh isn't due until 2015, although there may be a minor refresh in 2013 which according to the dealership I talked too, was more about bringing over some of the new tech that has been introduced in the A7 and the A8.

The preferred Audi of any kind has the new generation engine with a timing chain instead of the belt, 2009 and newer. The newest 2.0T power plant has variable valve timing on the exhaust side, generates 211 hp and about 250 lb ft of torque, and is even more desirable. If you can find either one these, it will be the best A4 yet. But, I agree with Mick that you will not be unhappy buying almost any A4.
