Hey Look! Mikey likes it!

Sorry, but from one Mike to another, I couldn't resist. Mike, you are asking an open question, but haven't given anyone anything to work with here. It looks like you found a Canadian Audi forum, just joined up, and are looking for some help here.

To begin with, there is no such thing as a "good buy", unless you know several things first. Like, what kind of condition is it in, and says who? Don't just take the previous owners word for it. Would you know a bad spark plug if you saw one? Did the previous owner change the timing belt and the water pump at 100,000 Km or sooner, and do they have the receipts to prove it? Is this a Toronto car, corroded up the wazzoo with winter salt? What is the condition of the leather interior? Was this car used as a highway driven commuter-mobile, or was it driven by a little ol' lady who only drove it to church on Sundays? Is this one the 180 HP standard engine or the 225 High Output version, and do you know how to tell the difference?

Notice how I haven't even asked about the price yet?

First you have to know WHAT you want in a car, and WHY. Then take a look at the size of your wallet and the size of your toolbox. What do you know how to fix, and what can you afford to pay someone else to fix for you? After you have had a good heart to heart talk between your wallet, your toolbox and your ego, THEN you can have a look at the sticker price of one of the most awesome Automobiles ever to cross the pond.

Rkngel you said what I was thinking. You hit the nail right on the head.

OH and one thing Rkngel did not ask is find out about the turbo and if it has been replaced. because you are right at the time it needs to be replaced or at least checked.

Cheers,

Hi there,

The comments of the two other TT fans are on the money.

I bought my Audi TT 225 for a very reasonable price.

However I have done quite a bit of mods and did have to fix a bunch of stuff.

So you could easily spend a few thousand bucks getting it up to snuff.

You may get lucky and all of the maintenance is up to date and you're golden.

I always assume that I have to do something and have funds available to do whats required.

I can give you some common problems that can manifest with a car of this vintage.

1. timing belt can be a major problem & should have been replaced by now. Audi was subject to a class action law suit with regards to the life of the belt.

2. Turbo charger starts to wear and starts blowing oil out the exhaust. I had to replace mine.

3. The Haldex rear differential can be problematic with the pre charge pump or haldex controller failing in which case you lose your all wheel drive.

4. The electronic stability system or ESP the sensors crap out defaulting the system to have no stability system. this I have experienced but the sensors are not expensive to get or install

I am not trying to dissuade from buying a TT.

I love the car but at least you know a little bit before you dive in.

Randy.

Don't forget, get any prospective purchase inspected. Find a trustworthy l.ocal mechanic who is familiar with these cars, and pay to inspect any car you are considering purchasing. The inspection will only cost 150 or so, and the mechanic will be able to identify problems. With that knowledge, you can either walk aw3ay satisified that the car was not the right one, or use that knowledge to haggle on the price.
