Default Caution: import from US with CPO...

Hi all,

I imported a 2006 A4 last year from the US and it was CPO for the previous owner.

Audi Canada DOES NOT honour the CPO on imported vehicles (even if you are in Quebec)

From the Office de protection du consommateur (Better Business Bureau?) the only thing I can do is:

1- Sue Audi USA (who would do that???)
2- Sue the salesman here in canada based on claims that my car would maybe be under warranty...

I guess I won't spend that much efforts in a car.

Just a heads up so that others who are tempted by the potential savings... it always bites you in the end...

To my knowledge thats incorrect....unless Quebec is somehow exempt from the usual rules governing CPO warranty transfer.

As far as I knew and according to what people have done in the past, the CPO was transferred to the new owner post-importation for a fee of $150

They always refer to August 2006 as a date when Audi USA stopped transfer of CPO to second owner...

Anybody else know how I can bypass that?

Just went through info about this both with Audi USA and Audi Canada. Audi CPO warranty from the U.S. will not be honoured in Canada, EXCEPT in Quebec where it IS honoured. So, LUCKY YOU living in Quebec. Must be some different provincial rules about warranty. I don't know about transfer fee.

Do you have any case numbers, anybody you spoke to that I can contact?

Audi Canada is denying my CPO because they say it was signed after august 2006 and Audi USA does not transfer anything after that date.

you can email me directly at vfortier at gmail dot com if you want to keep it private

Thanks a lot

I was able to receive the email from my friend a few replies up.

I tried to call the lady that sent the email but I got a phone call from the first rep that denied my claim. When I told him I had a copy of that email and that my lawyer would love it, he told me to send him a copy so that he could try to pass my CPO again...

I don't want to copy the full email but here what was interesting:

''A CPO vehicle that is built to meet United States specifications and is certified by an authorized Audi dealer in the United States can be exported into Canada. However, the CPO warranty would no longer be valid in Canada, except in Quebec where the legislature states that the warranties must remain with the vehicle. The CPO warranty would still be in place with dealerships within the United States. ''

The email was marked as January 15 2010. I called them last year in july for the change of ownership and they have a record for that...

Waiting for their call tomorrow, I guess my lawyer will need to get involved...

I went down and talked to the Manager of Crosby Audi in Kitchener today and specifically asked "if I bought a US Audi with a 2 year US Audi Extended warranty (CPO) would that be valid at a Canadian dealership and he said NO without question. He said I would have to take it across the border to a US Audi dealership and that would not be easy if it had to be towed...
So NO a US purchased CPO on a US Audi imported to Canada would not be accepted by a Canadian Audi dealership.

I also asked an independent car dealer in Kitchener if I could purchase an extended warranty from a private warranty company and he said sure i could , but it would not be anywhere near as extensive as an Audi CPO (Certified Pre-Owned warranty).

So this is what I have. I have no idea if involving a lawyer will have any impact on Canadian Audi dealers accepting US CPO's or not but even if they do, what will the lawyer costs be in labor fees to convince them?

Love to hear more input on this.

Damn, sucks to hear they changed the CPO rules (a while ago apparently).

I'm doubting lawyer will have much impact on Audi....they can pretty much throw as much money at this as they want, i'm betting it would be cheaper to fix anything going wrong (hopefully nothing knock on wood) than trying to fight it out with them.

I agree..... I have been a Japanese car owner for the last 30 years (Honda, Toyota, Nissan) and have had excellent luck on reliability, little or minor troubles and parts at a decent price if you are a good shopper (EBay, Kijiji, good wheeling and dealing etc).

My worry about jumping in the German car arena for the first time is .......... "Will the chances of gremlins, electrical issues, defects, breakdowns and overpriced parts be a REAL REALITY if I buy a 2006 audi A6 4.2? Or am I hearing only the worst cases here in this forum and other Audi forums? Should I bank $1000.00 - $1500.00 per year to repairs for this Audi or is that not very likely going top be the case?

For example, my 2001 Maxima SE 5 speed I bought new off the lot. I ignored half the dealer warranty service invitations. Sure I kept the Oil changed and yes I had to do brakes and tires every 3 - 4 years (Tires more like 2 - 3 years) but the rest of the service schedules I ignored as i have a better than normal understanding of vehicles and call me old school but I always thought and still believe to a degree that these regular interval scheduled maintenance appointments that the warranty lays out are pretty much just a way for the dealerships and the car factories to make extra revenue off of you even though the car runs just fine skipping them. In other words I believe that there are people that actually feel good when they drop a grand a year or so on their car. It gives them a sense of security that their car is up to date and kept in tip top condition maintenance's wise.
meanwhile I have skipped these regular maintenance recommendations and got years of trouble free driving out of my cars. Yes I do routine Oil changes, rad fluid flushes, air breather filters AND ..... brakes , tires and exhaust when needed and I have only dropped approx. $4700.00 total maintenance including tires, brakes, oil changes, alternator, Wheel Bearings, and a few minor misc. items over the last 9 years I have drove my 2001 Maxima. It had 143,000 kms on it before a deer ended my driving that vehicle last Jan/2010. So I guess that is about $520.00 per year.

Any estimation of what the Audi would be from those that have had the car for a few years?
