iPod or iPhone in A8L....confused
Hey guys....new member confusion. I have searched the forums and I just need a little guidance.
I just bought a 2006 A8L and having my iPod or iPhone to play over my stereo is MANDATORY. I went to the dealership to find out what it entailed and the parts rep who was really helpful informed me that you need three parts. A retrofit kit, a interface unit of some sort amd the actual plug for the iPhone. This totalled over 1200 before the installation.
I just wanted to know if anyone has installed this integration unit or what are my alternatives??
Any advise at all will be very much appreciated.
Thanks
NJV

I don't know if your looking for something where you can control it through the stereo or if just an FM adapter will do but you've got a couple of options.
FM transmitters:
Griffin Technology: FM Transmitters
They come in several options, ones that charge through cig lighter/12volt plug or ones that just run off the iPod/iPhone battery
I used to use one for my Mercedes before I got my A4, ended up giving it to my parents.
Adapters:
Dension: Home
Makes a few different products that allow you to connect ipods/iphones through your stereo for far less then $1200

Thanks for the reply...I am going to try the FM transmitter but the Denison Product is confusing to me as well. I am going to do more research for that product as well.
Thanks again for the reply

Well...just an update, I used my girlfriends FM transmitter and it surprisingly worked well, even driving right in the core. Don't get me wrong its not nearly as good as the CD play but it does give you very VERY cheap alternative to the over 1400 Audi wants for a iPod integration unit.
I will keep you posted on other options/solutions I try

Have any of you guys looked at the Ipod Kits found on EBay? Some are from a Poland supplier and some from a US supplier.
Has anyone tried buying one of these and id it work? I would rather have a direct hookup instead of a FM Transmitter. You lose sound quality from FM simply due to more limited frequency response limitations that FM signal have compared to CD.
So has anyone bought one of these and installed it?

Have you tried auto stereo installers? Try Kromer Radio on Bathurst, South of College. They have some experienced guys there. The 2006 should have a connection that could be used for AV input and all you need is an IPOD cable. They might need an adaptor or two. The IPOD cables are about $40. I'd have them take a look and offer advice and a possible solution for a lot less than dealer. My experience is that the car dealers know virtually nothing about stereo systems.

Thanks for the tip OK2000A8. I have my doubts that I can get away with this for less than $800.00 but I will try calling Kromer radio. Future shop in Waterloo said they could not do anything for my Ipod connection and there is a guy in Burlington that does them fro Burlington Audi but he is expensive.... $900.00 +++
I am surprised that there are not more Audi A8 owners that have wanted their Ipod hooked up and have some advice?

Your OEM deck will require an AV input port for this to work properly, otherwise you could always use the Aux Audio input. This should give you music without any text, album covers, listings, etc., similar to having a CD deck in trunk; just go from cd to cd and from track to track. I'd be suprised if there wasn't an AV IN port available on a 2006 OEM deck. Let me know how it goes.

Cassette adapters & AM/FM adpaters have degraded qaulity.. The kit from audi is a great choice, but too much money.. A Solution for this.. A new cd deck that can do everything.. Check out this cd deck by Pioneer DEH-33HD - CD Receiver with Built-In HD Radio™ Tuner and USB Direct Control for iPod®/iPhone® | Pioneer Electronics USA , It has bluetooth connection, for your phone, a USB can be used for music and a heaphone jack to connect your Iphone or media device to play music.. Plus it plays cds.. Alot less then $1200, and has the same sound qaulity.. Way better then cassette and am/fm adapters..
