You should see if the scheduled maintenance has been completed, and generally how the car has been looked after. Have a reputable shop or dealer check it out. Make sure the transmission shifts as its supposed to up to 120km/h and thats about it...

I like the A8's for their size, but the A6 4.2 is way more fun to drive. Try both before you buy. Nothing to loose unless your in the market for a fullsize.
Make sure you go through the car with a fine tooth comb, sit in every seat and play with everything. Make sure all the seats do what they are supposed to, also check the pull out pockets, they stop latching sometimes, operate all windows using every switch, check all doors for alignment ( eyes at level with bottom of windows - latch side, slowly open door 2 inches and see if it drops, then close slowly, should not require much effort and should not rise when it meets the latch) check oil level before it is started - not good if its low. Check all ball joints/ control arms for play. make sure all fluids are topped up - if anything is low, where did it go? make sure all electronics work, climate control - heat a/c (it should kick in if the whole car is warmed up) Check all keys in all locks, including all buttons on every remote. Trunk release has to be held for 5 seconds to unlock.
Timing belt should be changed in near future, manual says 160, 000 - not a chance. Transmission needs fluid and filter every 60,000Km - owners manual says its good for life (good for the life of the warranty - not the life of the car) and please use Synthetic oil everytime - If you dont like the maintenance - move on. Let someone else appreciate the Audi!
