Default RNS-E EU to US Change How-To

After hours, and hours of failure, I finally managed to get my european RNS-E unit running US software and reading US maps. You do not need VAG-COM to convert the unit to a usable state, but it does help to have. Here is my how-to:

Things you will need:

At minimum:
CD Burner
Hex Editor (There are many free ones available)
Original NAV DVD (or your backup copy of one)

Optional but nice:
VAG-COM
Dual Layer DVD burner that can set booktype to DVD-ROM (For Macs, you can use DVDPlusTool : DVDPlusTool for Mac OS X and a dual-layer DVD)

1. First step is to enter engineering mode.
Turn the unit on if it is not already
Click Nav
Press and hold the top-left button above the round wheel. Hold it for 10 seconds. Let go
Quickly press and hold the top-right button until engineering mode appears.
Go to General Info

If your System SW is X -- you are in hybrid mode. Remember this
If your System SW is not X -- you are not in hybrid mode. Remember your software number / SOXIDX number
If Navi and Audio SW start with V222 - your machine is, for all practical purposes, a US machine. If either or both are V220 or V221 it is still in Europrean mode. Remember the version number.

If your machine is in European mode (V220 or V221) you will now convert it to US. If it is already V222 then you should skip this next step.

2. Get these five files of a US DVD.
00.VNS
A222####.MOT
INDEX.TXT
LDM.BIN
LOADING.KWI

Copy them to a new folder called Update CD

Using the hex editor, change the first two instances of V222 in LOADING.KWI to match the version of your RNS-E Unit (from step 1)

Using a text editor, change both 222s in index.dat to match your RNS-E Unit's current version number (from step 1).

Change the SOXIDX: number to 10 more than what your current System SW is. If you were at 0650, change it to 0660, etc.

If your SW was showing X and you do not know what your SOXIDX should be, load up any Nav DVD that works with your unit. Since this DVD does not prompt you to update, the SOXIDX on the DVD is equal to your SOXIDX. Read the index.dat on the DVD and add 10. Change this number on the index.dat file in your “Update CD” folder. I had to change mine to 660 to register. You may have to change it higher.

Burn these five files to a CD and insert in your RNS-E. If it reads properly, it should perform the software update, upgrading your Nav and Audio to v222. If it does not, scroll down to Issues I've Noticed below.

Go to Engineering mode again verify that your Nav and Audio are v222. Your SW should still show X.

If you have VAGCOM, change STG 56 channel 97 to 1. Insert your original US DVD. An update should start again.

Your SW should now show SW-260, the same SOXIDX that was on your original DVD.

If you do not have VAGCOM, you can still use the current Nav CD you have. Future updates can be performed by copying the entire DVD to your computer, adding 10 to your current SOXIDX on the index.dat file of the DVD and burning that folder as a DVD-ROM

Ideally, you will want to set channel 97 to 1 instead.

Issues I’ve Noticed:

When inserting a DVD of the same region, it reads as Software Update and not as Navigation.
Problem: DVD was not burned properly as a DVD-ROM. Search the internet to see if your burner can have its booktype changed. If not, you will need to use your original DVD and not your backup copy.

Software recognized by RNS-E reader (title shows up properly) but does not automatically initiate update.
Problem: Channel 97 was not set to 1 or version number on the index.dat file and the loading.kwp file do not match the version numbers of the unit. If both are set correctly, try increasing your SOXIDX by increments of 10 until it updates. For some reason, mine would not update despite having set 97 to 1.

Any issues feel free to pm me or email: pedram . navid @ gmail . com

Mine came with 650 installed. I download the US 260 disc off The Pirate Bay, then ran the software upgrade. But the VAGCOM coding was not working so I changed the version on the US discs to 660, burnt a DVD, it ran the software update and I was done.

Thought I'd add a question I received, and its answer:
QUESTION
I am having some difficulty and was wondering if you could help. I am currently running a Euro RNS-E in the US. When I go into engineering mode, this is what I see.

System SW Index: 0100
HW Index: H50
Map database Index: NN0312
HU/NAVI SW Version: V220033E
Boot Version: V220100D

Now it looks like I am running a Euro unit (V220) and not a US unit and I'll need to do the conversion. The only problem is that I do not have the files (my DVD is some sort of hacked US DVD). Will these files exist on a 09-10 DVD? Where can I get a hex editor? Any chance you could send the files over to me? Please let me know and thanks for all your help.

Answer:

You can download a torrent of the latest NA DVD from the pirate bay: Audi RNS-E Nav DVD NA 2009-2010 USA / North America (download torrent) - TPB. It's a torrent file, if you're not sure how to download one, you should be able to find some guides on Google.

If you do not have an RNS-E, you will have to force an update by editing the files on the DVD. You can download a free hex editor for Windows from here: http://www.physics.ohio-state.edu/~p...it/hexedit.exe.
Take these files from the US dvd you downloaded from the pirate bay DVD and copy it to a folder called Originals. (You can mount the DVD using a program like CloneDrive: elby Free Software. This will make the DVD look like you burned it and inserted it into an actual DVD drive.)

00.VNS
A222####.MOT
INDEX.TXT
LDM.BIN
LOADING.KWI

Using your hex editor, open Loading.KWI. Change the first two instances of V222 to V220 (i got 220 from your HU/NAVI version). Save this file in a new folder, call the folder Modified.
Open INDEX.TXT. Change SOXIDX to 0110. (System SW plus 10). Save this file to the modifed folder. Copy the other 3 files from the Original folder (00.vns, A222###.mot, LDM.bin) to the modified folder. Burn the modified folder to a CD. Ensure you're only burning the root files and no folders. If done correctly, when you open the CD, you will only see these 5 files.

If done correctly, you should be able to insert the CD, start your RNS-E, and an update should happen automatically. Your software is now North American. You will need an original North American DVD or the ability to burn that file as a DVD-ROM. Many dvd writers do not do this, you will have to Google your specific burner type for more info.

I have a dum question here. Are you updating the map dvd to match the EU RNS-E, I thought we should do the other way around, update the EU RNS-E to match the USA map DVD.

Will this work on the Navigation PLUS model? Or does that even matter?

Default Re: RNS-E EU to US Change How-To

Here's the updated instructions for the RNS-E 2010 version from EU to US. These do not apply to the older RNS-E models..only the ones with the high-resolution LED screen.

----------
I know a few people here have been asking about converting the 2010 RNS-E from EU to US, so I thought I would do a quick guide. Took me a few coasters and some dumb luck to figure evertyhing out so hopefully I save people some time. I will be adding pics as I finish the retrofit but thought I would write everything down while it's still fresh.

Background: I have a 2007 A4 w/ Symphony II+. If you have the Symphony II+ you will have a quadlock connector behind the stereo, so you will not need a harness. Anything older, (e.g Symphony II, the tape deck model) will require the retrofit harness available on kufatec or elsewhere.

To begin, remove the old stereo.

If you are using Symphony II+, you will need to move a pin from the quadlock connector. The quadlock connector has 3 harnesses attached to it. Remove C and B (C should be green and B should be blue). There's a little black pin holding them in place. Gently push down with a screwdriver and slide out the connector.

Find pin C7. Use the label on the radio to identify it. Each corner of the connector will also have a number to help you identify pins. To remove the pin, simply tug firmly and it should come loose (though there might be a better way..) Then take that pin and insert it into B5 in the blue connector.

If you do not have a Symphony II+, simply connect your harness to the three connectors.

Install your GPS antenna. There are DIYs on here already for how to do this. You can connect behind the dash or if you're feeling bored, connect an extension into the sharkfin antenna.

Connect your radio antenna.

Finally, power on the unit and it should load. Enter engineering mode. First, press the NAV button. Then press and hold the top-left corner button (there are 4 buttons around a dial). Hold for ten seconds. Let go, and press and hold the top-right corner button until the engineering mode appears. Go to General > Version and you will see some numbers.

Write down the following: (I give example numbers below)
SW: 0200
HW: H07
HU/Nav SW Version:5741020
Boot: 574100B
Audio: 5740022 021209

Now, go home and find your RNS-E navigation DVD. You need a fairly recent one with the 575 folder on it. Copy the following files from the DVD to a folder on your desktop:
1. Sub-folder 575 (including LDM.BIN)
2. 00.VNS
3. 575INDEX.TXT
4. A575????.MOT <--the numbers after 575 will be different depending on the unit.
5. INDEX.TXT
6. LOADING.KWI

Using notepad, open 575INDEX.TXT
Change the number after SOFIDX to 10 more than your SW number from Engineering mode. In our example, it will be 210.
Change the 575 in NAVVER to 574. This tricks the unit into accepting an American (575) disk because we're telling it it's a European one (574). You also want to change the last 2 digits of the NAVVER so that they are 10 higher than your unit. So in our example, it will be changed to 5741030
Change AUDVER so that the first three digits are 574.
Save the file.

Use a hex editor (there are many free ones available, HxD is a good one) to change the following files. The left code is the address where you are making the change. The right is the text that should appear. Do not use find / replace because you may replace codes that do not need to be changed. You only need to change the code at the addresses below.

00.VNS
000001d0h: V57401 1030 (the 1030 should match the last four digits of NAVVER from the 575INDEX file
00000210h: V574

LOADING.KWI
00000050h: V574
00000080h: 1030 (again, this should match the last four digits from 575INDEX)
00000190h: V574

LDM.BIN in 575 subfolder
00000000h: .LDR V5740000

Burn this to a CD, finalize the CD, make sure no multisession is selected. Insert the CD into the unit and it will begin a software update automatically. No need to use vagcom to change any coding yet. Mine took about 10 minutes with a few reboots

At this point, you can begin using your navigation DVD. If you are burning one, make sure you use a DVD+R. If you have access to vagcom, then go to Navigation, change adaption channel 97 to 1, close vagcom, and insert a normal, unmodified nav dvd and the update should begin again. This will force the unit to update to a fully US version, instead of the hybridized version.

I have not yet received my faceplate, but will be updating this DIY once I do.

Any questions feel free to PM me and I will try my best to help. Note, I made this same statement previously and had a ton of people emailing me asking me to do all the heavy lifting for them. PLEASE read this, try the instructions, and if you fail, then ask for help!

Common Problems I've Noticed
I insert the CD and I do not see software update on screen.
Make sure you burnt the CD and finalized it. If it isn't burned properly the unit will not recognize the CD as a software update

I insert the CD and I see software update but nothing happens.
If the unit does not update on its own, then you did not copy the correct files, or you do not increase the count by 10 in the 575index file. Make sure you followed all these instructions.

I can't access my unit using VAGCOM. I get 'no response from controller' when trying to access Navigation
Make sure you moved the C7 pin to B5 if you had a Symphony II+ unit.

I bought my OEM RNS-E (193 - Second Gen) from an European seller, but he was already programmed the firmware for the North America and the seller included the DVD maps of North America. Simpler approach like. I paid 899.00 UDS, Shipping included.

Seller:
