Default Radar Detectors in Ontario

Yes, I know it is illegal but do any of you use Radar Detectors in Ontario and if so, what make and models do you use that can protect you from Radar Detector Detectors?

I did some research online and it appears the Escort 8500/9500 are great RD and so is the Valentine.

Can OPP detect if you have one. I am waiting for my 2011 S4 which should arrive in three weeks. Can't wait!!!

Look forward to your comments and experience.

just too illegal. They'll detect it, take it, and give you a fairly solid fine (around $400).

What's the point? That's $400 for the detector, and $400 for the inevitable fine, all to avoid a $200 speeding ticket?

If you really feel the need to speed on one of our highways:
  • drive a one exit section of the highway looking for cops
  • then exit and drive back to the other exit scanning for cops in the other direction
  • if there are no police officers, get back on for that section, hit 200km/h (since there's no radar, and it takes about 5 mins to setup radar) and get your fix
then go back to being a normal citizen for your journey

I had the unfortunate experience of being "detected" a number of years back on the 401. I wasnt speeding and was surprised when all of the sudden the unmarked car passing me put on his lights and pulled me over. Due to a very stealth install, we had to go to the station for tools to remove it. Since I cooperated, my ticket was "only" $170. versus a potential $400. ticket and requirement to appear in their local court. I decided to use the washroom there before getting back on the road and the guy showed me their room of fame where they had a wall of detectors that represented just about every one made over the past 20 years.

There are undetectable detectors..
For me, it's not the cost of the ticket, it's the points.....

So which ones are undetectable and how do you know?

well...sigh...Google is your friend
Valentine one is NOT undetectable.
I suppose I should clarify what we mean by "detectable"
Example:
Unmarked cop driving behind you, and you are in la la land. (not paying attention to your surroundings, which is your best defense against radar)
Cop turns on his RF radar gun, and your radar detector goes off, then you hit the brakes. He sees your brake lights.
He does this a few times, with same results: YOU HAVE BEEN DETECTED. Cop pulls you over, and asks for you to relinquish your radar detector.
I have had this happen to more than one aquaintance.

No electronics (short of disconnecting your brake light) is going to save you from this.
By the above definition, then, nothing is "undetectable".

Ok that's out of the way.

Two types of radar guns RF, (RADAR) and optical (AKA LASER).
RADAR
Equipment to detect the RF (AKA Radio Frequency) radar the cops use is one of VG2/VG3/SPECTRE (there may be a newer one out now). Actually manufactured by BEL Electronics, right here in Mississauga. Detects the residual radiation that a radar detector emits during operation.
Defense:
a) Shielded radar detectors
b) radar detectors that don't operate at the frequencies that VG2/VG3/SPECTRE is looking for.
c) don't speed
BEL has one, so does ESCORT, as do a few others (again look it up). (But not Valentine)
Technology is changing so fast that no point listing makes and models here: do your internet research.

LASER (AKA LIDAR)
A laser detector doesn't emit anything, so basically all LASER DETECTORS are invisible to electronics detection. Laser JAMMERS, however, are a different story.
Note I have never seen a stand alone LASER detector, ususally packaged with an RF detector.

From recollection, all such devices are illegal according to the Highway Traffic Act, regardless of the technology used.

My info is at least 2 years old. Currently (for the record) my vehicle is not equipped with any radar/laser jamming or detecting devices. (still trying to decide which one!!)

Postscript:
the Escort Passport SRX Radar Detector is also (I believe) a laser JAMMER which can be detected. LASER jammers actively send out signals as counter measures to LASER speed guns.

According to web site below
We do not recommend Escort Passport SRX for Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, New Brunswick, and PEI. Passport SRX is not undetectable to Spectre RDD (Radar Detector Detector). We recommend Escort Passport 9500ci instead

MrT thanks for the research and write up. As an ex-police officer I can tell you that owning a detector is against the Highway Traffic Act. Notice I said owning one. Meaning that even if you have it in a box in the trunk of your car the police can seize it and say goodbye to it.

I also mentioned that I am an EX-police officer which means that if there was a great detector out there that can't be detected I would consider it for myself. Not that I normally speed but it does provide a level of security in the event I fail to look down at my speedo or there is a change of speed limit and I didn't notice it.

A few of my friends own detectors and have never been caught.

Good Luck!!

ditto

At the risk of splitting hairs (for the moment)
I assume you are referring to section 79 (1,2,3)
"No person shall drive on a highway a motor vehicle that is equipped with or that carries or contains a speed measuring warning device 1996, c33, s.12."

You don't even have to OWN it!!!! just have it somewhere's in the vehicle!

And section 79 (7)
"No person shall sell, offer or advertise for sale a speed measuring warning device by retail"
soo... BELTRONICS is ok, they can sell thousands as a wholesaler..
(love our laws sometimes..)
