Engine starts. But only sometimes.

Engine starts. But only sometimes.
just checking in to see if anyone else has been experiencing starting issues this cold winter.
I have a 2005 B6 S4 that seems to be having difficulty starting, especially when it gets cold out. The folks on Audizine seem to think it is due to the starter (which they say needs to be replaced).
My car has little difficulty starting when parked indoor. However, if left outside overnight or longer, the car turns on but will not starte. There seems to be a complete disconnection between the ignition - the engine makes no attempt to start whatsoever.
The car will gladly start if it has been running, but as time goes by, and the temperature falls, the chances of starting quickly fade away.
Anyone else feeling this pain or can say what might be causing this unusual problem?

Re: Engine starts. But only sometimes.
I have a similar/same problem. Whenever I start for the first time of the day, there is a pause. Sometimes a split second, sometimes 5 seconds or more and a few times - nothing. Take yesterday as an example, I sat in the car with the key turned to start position and held it there. All the accessories came on, but no sound, no nothing from the engine. Pushed it down the drive, maybe 20 metres, nothing. Went back inside for a coffee, but after 3-4 minutes decided to study the handbook. While I was at it, I tried the ignition, you guessed it-started first time! Not even a pause. The rest of the day, no problems, no pauses. Had one day where I left it several hours (and walked to the shops) then it started.
Service said they couldn't reproduce it even when I left it there for for three morning attempts. So it's a bit like a time-bomb, when's it going to fail completely and leave me stranded? By the way, I'm in Melbourne Australia, so very cold weather's not an issue.

Just in case anyone didn't know - the Coolant Temp Sensor is covered under warranty for 10 years or 160,000km's. I just bought my 2003 A4 and the Sensor needs replacing. Dealer said the check engine light must come one before they will replace it.
