Default Buying a used 2005 S4 with 30k - many questions!

Hey all.

I'm a subaru sti owner who is trading in for a more family oriented car - that being said - I have a few questions for you guys.

I'm purchasing a early 2005 S4 with 30k for about $36,000. Am I overpaying?

Second, since i'm purchasing a used car which is in pretty immaculate condition if I might add, do I have anything to be worried about other than the usual used car stuff? Like, are there problems with these models?

I have the option of just getting a brand new pontiac G8 for roughly the same price i'm getting the used S4 for - is it worth it to get the S4?

Your general opions on these questions is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks all. BTW - i'm going in to probably purchase it tomorrow, please let me know your thoughts asap!

Have you driven both? I had an 01 S4 and was going to replace it with a 05 S4 but opted to get an 05 A6 with the 4.2L engine. I love how much more room the A6 has yet with the 4.2 it is very quick.

I think you should drive both the G8 and the S4. Not sure if it is a factor or not for you but the Audi V8's are very thirsty engines

I agree they are thirsty, but the fun is awesome and it is worth paying for the gas trust me. 36k? is this negotiated down? We have some here in alberta that are '04's selling for 27k, I think thats on the high end but i would negotiate it down as these markets are tought times for dealers and they are willing to go down, just know that the mark up that they buy the car from the other owenr is always $5-10k cheaper then waht they sell it for. I would put in an offer and not get attached to the vehicle. When I was buying my old A4 back in the day it was selling for 34k I put in an offer for 28k and walked away they called me in a few weeks telling me my offer was accepted. I came back to the dealer that was selling the car and gave a new offer for 27k as they made me wait for two weeks so they went with it as they saw that I was not bugging. Now you can swing the sale your way pretty much. It is a lot easier to buy the car you want at a fair price nowadays. You just gotta be strong and stand your ground. A 2005 model end is really good as it is a year end model for the B6 and all the bugs have been fixed.

Regards,

I'd have a lot of difficulty comparing a Pontiac G8 to an Audi S4... just doesn't compute

Hi, I think that the price is fair for the amount of k's. The one S4 that is for sale in alberta for $27,000 is an 04 with over 100ks and is not pristine. The price for the car and km's is good.I think you should be able to get it lower. These cars are very rare and hard to find one in good condition with whatever options you want. As for the G8 I am not farmilial with it because it is a GM. I just can't imagine even comparing that car to an S4 I mean Audi style class and grace compared to a Cavalier. I think even the STI is a far superior car to anything GM puts out. It basically comes down to your financial position and your passion for fine vehicles. New vehicle + warrenty= good fiscal decision. Used S4 with the possibility of a 2-5 thousand dollar repair bill (idler chain guides,or clutch?) Basically boils down to your financial position. Probably should factor in fuel costs. My little pig is very hungry but leaves me with a satisfied smile every time i drive. Audi can be an expersive world but the old saying you get what you pay for. On that note my S4 is the best purchase I have made.

I can't even imagine what it'll be like to drive a RWD V8 in the winter (it's a long time ago since I drove the RWD V8 in the rain). I often spun out when turned hard/fast in rain while I owned the Corvette. May be I shouldn't be driving that fast or turned that hard when it rain, but then again, I never did have that problem with the quattro

You can't compare these two cars at all.

That's like comparing a Ferrari to a Saturn.

Get the S4, although that price seems a bit high... something more in the 32k range sounds more like it.

keep in mind you have full warranty until 4yrs or 80k.

make sure the service has been kept up, very important with these cars.

I paid 32K for an 04 S4 in MINT condition with a 2 Year "bumper to bumper" warrenty, came in handy when one of the coil packs on the 4.2L V8 went (however since it's chain driven and the coils are really the only thing next to the oil that need to be changed it was worth it).

The replacement was $160, need to get some other work done to as she's got some scratches from the winter but next to that this one is by far the BEST car I have ever driven, i've driven the wrx STi series and the M3, G8 etc, I like the S4 better and for the price you can't complain, it's not as fast as the Evolution 9 (well the EVO is also a few hundred pounds lighter) has more horsepower than the STi and weighs more but it will corner at obscene speeds and comes with 18" rims stock, the one thing all my friends and passengers complement is my Interior, with an Audi the attention to the minor finishing details is what makes them great.

So far I'm very happy with it, mine was an 04 S4 Avant, red with black & white Recaro int. The ind. mechanic that appraised it said he has never seen such a good condition car.

Next to that I say test out all three but I got the Avant because it's a sleeper and because it's family oriented, not quite an SUV but the extra space does come in handy.

The sedans are a little tight, and they also have a soft top so really it's up to you, I went with the Avant because it's a stiffer body, and thus has better handling characteristics. This car had 96K on it when I bought it (I'm in Ontario so we pay quite a premium on our vehicles here, i'm not sure why yet but that's just the way it is).

Hi, personnally, i wouldn't be able to compare a G8 to an S4! By the way, i am selling mine. I will be moving to Greece in a couple of minths, so i need to let my baby go
It's an Audi S4 2004, silver, 89,000 kilometers with the APR software on it. Let me know if you are interested. I'm asking 26k CAD firm. No taxes. The reason i'm selling it cheap is because it was accidented when i got it. Everythign was changed and it was lightly hit on the back left. Car has been inspected and certified. Also, all maintenance have been done:

-oil changed 2000 kilometers ago (full synthetic)
-serpentine belt changed
-all 8 coils were changed
-all eight spark plugs changed (platinum)
-fuel filer
-air filter

If you are not interested, others are welcome to ask me questions. By the way, the car was not hit hard. I can show you the pictures of the car when i bought it. I'm located in Montreal.

Jimmy.
