1. Performance wise the S4 can easily be made faster than the RS4 at this point in time. I am sure that is about to change with JHM starting some serious work on the platform.

2. Sound wise I agree with Stevelev. I do not think the B7 S4 V8 sounds as aggressive as the RS4 one and that is completely my own interpretation.

3. The RS4 has about 5000% more presence than the B8 S4 or the B7 S4. Out of the box the car will handle better as well as long as you have a working DRC.

4. The Carbon Build up stories are greatly exaggerated. It does not apply to all RS4 uniformly, some engines are worse than others and there are people out there that never had to have a clean done. They are rare, but they exist, just check QW's thread on that. It also depends what oil you run and how hard you drive the car.

5. The RS4 will probably hold its value best, as these cars are extremely rare and they are somewhat considered a design icon for their time (and this platform). Of course I am biased, but if you are interested in the overall experience and not only tangible, measurable things, then go RS4 all the way.

all good points with a couple of exceptions

1. very true...this may be changing. Will still be pretty much a tossup.

2. you're talking stock B7 S4 exhaust...and nobody with a performance mind keeps the stock exhaust on their S4. We'll test your modified RS4 vs. my modified S4 exhaust this week when I log your car (why didn't you just PM me?!!!)

3. maybe not 5000% but it's certainly something BIG

4. no they're not. I've got logs from a bunch of cars. Measuring RPM/sec of carboned cars vs. non carboned is actually pretty distinct. I was a non-believer...I thought it was exaggerated. It's not. We're talking about losing 10% of your acceleration. That's significant. Otherwise, you're driving a 380hp car. Dan owning an RS4 will finally blow the lid off this mess.

5. This is perception, but is it reality? It used to cost $75-80,000 to buy a preowned RS4 (say back in late 200. now it's about $50-55,000 for a 2007. Hard to say...but what you say makes sense. There are something like 2500 RS4s in North America and I've seen about 10 in Canada with my own eyes...so they're certainly rare.

As I said above, all three are great cars, and all three will keep the OP happy.

I have heard boravrg's Fast Intention Catback and it sounds very nice, still it does not come across as aggressive and I do not even have a fancy exhaust

And I did not PM you because I got really busy and the dealer on top of that pulled my date forward so now my car is going in on Saturday.

What I meant to say is that it is over-exaggerated that EVERY single RS4 will have Carbon clean up every 10K.

alittle late but my insignificant opinion having had quite a few superchared/turbo vw/audis is that if you plan to keep this car for along time the s4 4.2v8 is the way to go because the naturally aspirated engine. because there will be a time that supercharger/turbo is going to give you greif. i seen few 4.2 v8s with 200,000 miles not kms running still great.but really both cars are totally awesome.
