Thumbs down 2008 RS4 US-Canada bumper modifications

Hi everyone,

I ordered a red 2008 RS4 from a dealership in the US and was planning to import it into Canada. It seems that Transport Canada has decided the bumpers on the US version of the RS4 are not OK for Canada. The RS4 is admissible to Canada but supposedly requires bumper modifications.

Does anyone know what the exact problem/issue is? How would they know if the modification has been done? An Audi dealership in Calgary quoted me $5,000 to modify the bumpers so they would meet the Canadian standards. This is baloney.

I'm betting the bumpers are probably just fine. Anyone have any ideas or comments about getting the car registered in Canada while avoiding expensive or complicated modifications?

Thanks!

Off hand I have no idea what could be wrong. Replacing with what look to be the exact same bumpers seems just to be taking $5000 out of your pocket but hey the law is the law it seems.
Are you able to get it done anywhere else other than the dealer without voiding warranty?

Either way, congrats on a new RS4, it's an awesome car with the V8

I think the modifications that have to be done is not the cover itself, but the rebar structure so as to meet the 8km/h minimum as opposed to the 3mph minumum in the states (someone correct me if I'm wrong on those numbers).

I am not sure if it are the bumpers. It could quite well be an immobilizer issue.

When I looked into importing a TT a year or so back, 5k was the range they were quoting me for bumper mods...

great car, I am envious and quite jealous. Your car most likely has the immobilizer and therefore only requires the bumper mods.

To others here, be very careful on the purchase of any 08 or newer cars from the US as all cars from 08 on require tan immobilizer. there are cars that are next to impossible to modify and therefore you will not be able to drive this car after 30 days as you will not be able to meet the new CDN requirements.

07 and older cars do not apply.

I would be curious to know what the outcome of your journey was? What was your final bill for bumper update? I'm in the process of bringing up a RS4 Cab and have the same bumper issues. Any words of wisdom would be much appreciated.

If I were in your shoes, I would call Audi USA directly and ask away. They are very knowledgeable in the Canadian modifications necessary for importation. 1-800-822-2834 (AUDI), Customer Care advocate

I think this is done for the 8km crash test but more likely to try and stop people in Canada from getting a RS4 in the US that for some reason is priced $30,000 less.

$64K in the US and $94K here, what gives?

yeah we had that discussion at the office today... one of my co-workers wants to buy an '08 535' touring, but says that it's 30k more expensive here then in the states... what gives?
