I know...talk about an about face!

So my stock brakes were just about shot (50,000 miles exactly on original rotors and pads all around. Pretty solid!)

I needed new front pads and rotors, and new rear pads. Rear rotors are fine. I went with HAWK HPS pads (high performance street) which are basically the good all around pads. Lower dust, low noise, solid performance.

I also went with JHM lightweight front rotors.
I weighed these at 15.25 lbs vs. stock front rotors at 25 lbs (EACH!). This seems like a typo, but it's not. Yes, the stockers really weigh 25 lbs (EACH!) and yes the JHM rotors shave 10 full pounds (EACH!).

I was told last week by a few folks who have them that the rotors will make a legitimate bump in performance...but I was skeptical. Would I really feel it? I mean we're talking about the things that stop my car...making it feel faster? Can't be.

Well it can.

I found the car lurches forward much more happily from a stop. Pulling out of the dealership (they did the install and an inspection of the entire car for me since my warranty was running out) I RIPPED through first gear a little quicker than I expected. I just didn't think much of it and continued on. Then I hit a light, waited, and took off again. RIP! The car just goes a bit better. Same in all gears, but I really felt it in first.

I keep logs of my car pretty regularly, so I'm going to go and do some logs with the LW rotors and see if there's indeed a real bump, or if I've had a visit from the purchase-justification fairy

When I have to do my rear rotors, it's going to be tough to skip the JHM rears. To be honest, I'm still undecided because they're not free ($525), and they only shave like what...7lbs? Still shaving rotating mass is FUN. I think I want a LW flywheel next, and some nicer wheels. I've been eyeing the BBS CH wheels for a long time, but they're heavy as ****. BBS RE though...basically look like a lightweight forged CH (about 20lbs each vs. the CH at 24 or so). Compared to stockers at 25lbs and my VMR708 at the same, 20lbs per corner would shave another 20-24lbs of rotating mass. That's way too tempting not to do.

LW rotors front -20lbs
LW rotors rear -7lbs
LW flywheel -13lbs
LW crank pulley -5.5lbs
LW wheels -24lbs

69.5 lbs of rotating mass shaved

I've currently only got front rotors and the crank pulley. That's 25.5...PLENTY to go.

hey do the B7 A4s have the same front rotors as the S4?

If so, definitely consider JHM's LW product.

some S4 guys buy them, then upgrade to a BBK moments later (fickle people) so you can often find them for like half price with 40,000 km of life in them.

Took the car to the dragstrip yesterday. All around pretty solid conditions...maybe a bit too cold as I had a pretty serious inability to launch smoothly. I either bogged or blew the tires till about 5000-5500rpm. It was EMPTY though which was nice. Only about 15 cars running when I got there...including a white Z06 that was one of the best sounding, best launching, best running cars I've ever seen.

Back to me. I got 5-6 runs in 45mins. I could have had 20 runs. Some keys for the day

a) I couldn't cut a 60 foot to save my life. All in the 1.9 range on clean runs.
Best 60 foot was 1.949...worst was 2.2 (ESP was on )

b) MPH was pretty solid - unless something went horribly wrong (i.e. the 2 runs where I had ES ****ING P on) the MPH was always around 106.X. I have 3 or 4 at 106 and one high 105.
Best MPH was 106.86...worst was 104.25.

c) I got it down the track pretty good, but could certainly shave some time with a couple of powershifts.
Best ET was 13.363...worst was 13.876,

When I went to the track, my goals were to not embarass Germany in front of the domestics and JDM guys, to trap better than 13.69, to MPH better than 104.0 Considering my results, I'm happy (and lamenting the arrival of winter...I want to go back again).

Mistakes
1. I left ESP on a couple of times (it re-enables after you turn the car off and restart...and I forgot)
2. I had my ****ing heat (on auto) and seat heaters on. I'm sure this does nothing, but it's stupid. I noticed it when I was leaving. Rookie mistake.
3. launched at boggy rpms on 2 runs (2000-2900)
4. most important - I drove some 60 minutes to get to the track, then did all my runs in the next 60 minutes. Next time I'll get there early, park the car for 30-40 waiting for them to start running, and then go. I'm not sure what a difference this would make, but I'll give it a try.
5. space out the runs - as I said I did half a dozen in like 45 mins. Awesome, but not the coolest solution.

Here's a video of one run. I went alone so no camera person...I just wedged our point&shoot Canon camera under the passenger headrest. Worked like a great tripod.

3718 without me, 3970 with me and helmet. 1/4 tank (-75lbs), no spare (-50), exhaust and rotors (-30)...but slightly heavier wheels/tires (+10)

Three best timeslips...

Went again this past Saturday. No other Audis there....just me, a Ford GT, a million hp Civic, a fast foxbody, a couple of pickups and a few vette guys. Awesome conditions except a little wind in the face which hurts. Got the 60 foot a bit tighter in the 1.8s...If I can get that down to 1.80 I'll be very happy.

Catless downpipes are the next mod, so we'll see if that helps next time.

just made a downpipe mod that should get me over that hump (hopefully anyway!)
my best ET was 13.21 (@ 107.30 mph). Best mph was 107.39...best 60 foot was that 1.87, so plenty of work to do on the launch.

Here's the best timeslip...
